First Gig Ever with 5 String—Stingray, of course!

Played my first gig EVER with a 5 string (after 35 years of gigs with 4 strings). Whew!!!!! We were supposed to play outside in Cumberland, MD. Got rained out, moved into a local bar & grill, played 2 sets, and got a free dinner.

Looking good! I did my first gigs with an SR5 a few weeks ago. I had not played a 5 string in about 8 years so it made for some interesting passages! It was nice having those low notes on some of the stuff we do and I love the tone of the SR5.

Every 5 years or so I decide that "this is the time I'll really stick to the 5-string until I can play it." This happened when I bought my active SUB-5 over Memorial Day weekend I used it on a gig a couple of weeks ago...let's just say I still have work to do.

I have to stand a 4 stringer up so it feels like the upright to play 4 now days.

I'd like it to become that natural, but the fact is, my Stingray 4 has such amazing tone and cut through, I keep coming back to it at gigs. Same with the Sabre. Now maybe if I had a couple of 5'ers, but I'm 5-less at the moment, until DD arrives.

The only 4 stringers I have left are my old P bass and a P kit bass that I put together a few years ago. The other 3 and the DD that I have on order are all 5ers.

My first gig w/ a 5 was in '97 & it was horrible. Made a 2nd attempt in '03 & that was unsuccessful as well. Got a Bongo 5'er over the summer & now I'm hooked.

Had a SR5 that I really liked a couple of years ago and now have a Bongo single H five coming. Figured I needed one.

My first gig with the 5 came after the wife bought me this for my birthday.

That became the day I stepped up another notch.

Us old dogs can still bite even if we leave a tooth or two behind.

I tried playing a 5er last year about this time, and I enjoyed it a lot. But I decided that the 4-banger felt more like "home" to me, so I got rid of the 5er. Now I'm gassing for another 5-string!

I think most people make a bigger deal out of switching from four to five than it really is. I played 4's for ten years before I got my first 5 and it was a big adjustment but it didn't take long. Just before I bought it, I read an article with John Pattitucci (sp?) who had gone from a 4 to a 6. He put the 4 away and jumped into the 6 with both feet. I did the same and it worked (well, I didn't quite sound like him, but...).

Congrats on trying it - pretty soon you'll switch back and forth without having to think about it.
