Flats on MM

I just played my first gig with Sadowsky flats on my my HHP Bongo 5 string, and it sounded astounding.

I''ll try and record some clips in the next couple of days.

On a side note, the wah solo at the end of the second tune is killer.

I want to try Chromes on my 79....I take it that I need extra long scale to deal with the string-through-body? I also want to try them on my 89 top-load bridge.

I've done a search but the gauges are a bit on the lean side...I'd like at least 105 for the "E" string but prefer 110. The rest 45, 65, 85. Just regular (for both Basses). Any advise my friend. Thjey're a bit expensive if I get it wrong.

If you mean "killer" in that I take three months to get them done, then I wholeheartedly agree.

I just listened to the two tracks and they both rock! Mark, you were right about the guitar solo at the end of "White Room". That guy can really throw down on his guitar. Excellent playing from everyone there and I really like the sound of your bass with flats. I'm enjoying the TIs that I put on mine a couple of weeks ago too.

Really cheap if you buy a few sets at once and save on postage. You probably know how much Chromes retail for downunder (AUD$90 = US$60).

105 is the heaviest gauge E string in the Chromes range. If you want 110 you'll need to go for the Rotosound Steve Harris set, but I find the tension on Roto flats way too tight.

I've never bought the extra long set, since the regular long set are fine for my top load Stingrays and Thunderbirds (I have TI flats on my string thru fretless Stringray). However, it might pay to play safe and order extra long for your string thru Stingray.

Sounds like flats are what you're looking for. The tone is generally "duller" than roundwounds, but you can still get plenty of zing from them if desired by tinkering with the EQ on your instrument or rig. Listen to the MP3s I posted at the top of the thread to hear how they sound. It's more of a vintage tone than a modern tone. Depends on what you're looking for tone wise.

That's certainly the case if you buy one set at a time. I tend to buy my strings in lots of 5 or 6 packs (either for myself or going halves with another local bass player), so the shipping ends up being very little per set.

The TIs on my fretless are regular length, and there are 3 full wraps on the D string tuning peg, so they're plenty long enough.
