Hey Jon -

Here's some neck things I've wondered about for a while, since we all know how great the EBMM necks feel, that they come in different carves, and many of us have heard the story about how you guys digitized the neck for what became the EVH/Axis.

Questions are:

1) Are the other necks on MM's guitars digitized from the pet instruments of an artist (like one of Albert Lee's Teles or Lukather's vintage v-necked Strats), or from a particularly good feeling existing instrument in the case of non-artist affiliated guitars like the Silo?

2) If not, were they carved by hand and passed around to get a consensus on what felt good to the most people, or....? If a particular model's neck design was originally hand carved by EBMM, who do we have to thank for doing the great job?

3) What would be good general relative descriptions of one neck vs. another? For instance, I've been told by one of the EBMM customer service guys that the AL neck carve is very similar to the Silo, but still different...

I know there's a lot of "proprietary information" legalistic non-disclosure mumbo jumbo that might prevent the fully detailed answers we'd want to see here, but if not it would be great to get some kind of background on those great necks, esp. for those unlucky individuals in remote places where they can only sample an MM guitar model or two at a time.

Thanks!

Ok...I can't answer about the Luke or Albert Lee(I just set up a new guitar for Albert yesterday) I wasn't there when they were being designed. But I was around for the Petrucci design. We would build a neck, he would play it, give us his feedback, we would rework it, more feedback from John until he was happy. Then the neck was measured, and the CNC program was written.

If the other necks were hand carved it would have been Dudley our design guru who did the work.

I wil try and find out about the other sig. models on Monday( I work Mon-Thurs, and at home now). I hope this answers you questions

Nice! Speaking of neck designs....the Petrucci's are sweet as hell. Funny thing is I kinda went full circle since in some ways I consider these shred guitars, but these sound better than my old ones and are mostlikely more versatile. Plus on my desert Gold, Guitarrez was on the case and pretty much made it the best playing guitar I've ever owned, the finish work on here is superb Juan! Meant to ask, does JP have ALL of his axes set up with your special "Rock God Treatment" or does he utilize the unfinished at all? Methinks the finished ones probably hold up better on tour in general, especially on those outdoor dates at Jones Beach.

Jon,

Your neck is really not finished...I sealed it with thinned down super glue, but that is soaked into the grain. It feels like its finished because of the way I sanded it and waxed it after. I start with 600 grit, then 1200 grit,, then 000 steel wool then I wax it, but in answer to your question about JP's guitars yes, thats the same thing he gets.

Hey Jon -

I've heard of super-glue-on-raw-wood neck treatments before both here and elsewhere, and always thought it was a fascinating concept/solution. What's it thinned down with, what ratio, and how do you apply it? Must take a lot of those little tubes... ;)

Did you guys come up with that idea, and is that the same thing that's done when a customer requests you guys to do a sealed neck instead of an oiled one?

BTW, very cool that you got to do AL's new guitar (guess he has to replace that one from the Clapton auction, eh?)...any special new features or finishes on that?

Lastly, a suggestion: you oughta talk Dudley into coming onto the board here sometime if he hasn't already! :)

That's been my question. Dude it looks like glass! So shiny. Hehehe. Hmmm. The others have no comparison in feel. I was considering having Pete update my order on my Silo to include a satin finish on the neck just because it;s be different. thanks for that explanation. I've played that one in particular pretty much every day since I got it back. My other Pets are lonely now. :D

Late!

Sealing the neck is not something we do on production instruments. They all come with oil and wax. Purplesport...Its not really complicated..I thin the glue down with acetone. It is applied by wetting a paper towel weth acetone, and squirting a small amount of super glue on the wet towel, then jsut rub the neck with it. Then I sand it, and re-wax it.

Jon,

Doesn't sound that hard to do....hmmm. I may consider that myself having done a fair amount of finish work on a bar and the accompanying shelving and such. I just didn't know if you sprayed it down with something then sanded. Question about maintenance, you still use the B-C Wax on there?

late!

Jon

Ps...

Hey no worries Pete.

Jon I'm curious too about Albert's guitar you set up for him. What color and was it a trem or not??

Jon,

Yeah still use the wax on it when it feels like it needs it. Deadringer, it would cost about $40.00 plus the cost of shipping it to and from EB/MM ( I don't have any idea what it costs to ship a guitar)

Actually shipping the guitar to you should be fairly inexpensive considering you guys haven't started building just yet. :D

The problem is, that I have nothing to do with production guitars. I run the repair shop. The sealed neck is not an option on production guitars

How much does this "treatment" cost? You have my attention.

Hey Orange, is there really that big a difference?

It's smooth as hell. To be honest that particular neck was tops before Jon's special brew this just helped it along...

Senior Guitarrez....sorry about the flood of inquiry do to my good fortune! ;)

Not to mention....it was in perfect tune out of the case, and it was like 86 outside where it sat for a few hours before I got to it, when it got delivered.
