Hey Mark,

Was checking out your basses. What did you pay for that Greco 4001? In the back of my mind I've always been attracted to Rickenbackers, but a good copy would suffice.

There's a pawn shop just down the street from where I live here in Japan. You should see this place. A sh*tload of guitars (basses, electrics, and acoustics) all crammed into this little upstairs store. Most all of 'em are used, but many are in real good shape. I've seen many a Greco while walking through the joint and wondered how good a guitar they are? In case I see a Rick' copy, I'll at least know if the guy is trying to rob people blind or if it's a good deal.

I like your Hohner Steinberger copy too. Totally retro there. I think Geddy Lee used one back in the 80's for a little while, which is probably why I'm jealous.... If I could afford a custom Wal, I'd get one too.

Thanks man.

I had a Hohner Jack Custom for a while (same bass, but with a more traditional body shape)... Hohner's headless basses are great instruments, which is probably why Gibson had them make the Steinberger Spirit line.

Geddy had a Steinberger L2:

A bit more spendy

The Greco 4001 copy wasn't cheap (not much less than a used Ric 4001) - from memory it was US$675 shipped from Singapore. I was willing to pay that much because it was neck thru, a non-Ric colour (blueburst) and was from a very solid ebay seller with a great rep. It's a great bass. My 70's/80's Ibanez/Grecos are as good as any other bass in my arsenal.

Thanks for the reply.

I'll keep a kean eye out 'round these parts. If there's a specific Japanese bass your looking for let me know. I'll see what I can dig up. That goes for everyone...
