From 5 string back to 4

Anyone gone from playing mainly 5 string to 4 string?

My StingRay 5 and I get along great, and man do I love that bass.

However, I seem to just flow more naturally on the 4 string. Not that Im any better on 4, just more efficient maybe. Ive played mainly 5 for the last 5 years. So Ive given some serious thought to my next bass being a 4 string.

How crazy am I?

My blank-plank on order is a 4-banger. Treating it as an experiment. Will see if I can hang on a fretless and if I prefer 4 strings over 5.

The 5 is nice since I know I won't have to detune but everything I've worked on so far just has me using the B as a 34" thumbrest. And I do get confused on which string I am deep into practice sessions. Although, this tells me it is time to take a break.

I played fivers exclusively for 4 years until last summer when I bought my first SR4.I now have three 4's and one 5 .I reach for one of the 4's most of the time unless it's something that I really have to use a 5 on. I feel the same way about flowing better on a 4 also.I have no problems on a 5 it's just that I played a 4 for nine years before getting my first 5 string and it just feels like home(plus it's lighter on my back).I say your next bass MUST be a 4 Travis. Get back to your roots but always keep the SR5, you'll never find a better 5 string than a SR5....

Not really. All my basses have flatwound strings, which won't need changing at the earliest until my 4 month old son finishes college.

That sure is a plus to flats isnt it Mark. The older the flats on my SR5 get, the sweeter they sound. Ill still have many more YEARS left in em.

To add to the difference, the electronics in the 4 sound different. I like the immediacy of the 4 as well, but the versatility of the 5 brings me back. I think I might even just try a 6-string next time I'm in front of one. Hmm, wonder if there's such a thing as a Bongo 6 coming down the pipes?

I'm trying to sell my StingRay 4 after buying a StingRay 5HH and Bongo 5HH and an Axis Super Sport - all in the last two weeks! I'll definitely replace it, but only with:
- a limited edition (not the 30th as I'm not a huge fan of red)
- a Sunburst/Maple StingRay 4H
- a Silhouette Bass Guitar

Aww hell, I'll probably get all three in the end anyway!
