Hey guys, doubt you will remember me.Havnt been on here for what seems an eternity!

Just thought id ask the most qualified people in the gigging/bass playing world(all EB users of course) . I have 1992 SR4 with maple neck and bridge mutes etc etc and due to me being in a indie rock band with major record label interest i need to update my setup! im looking for a rig that i can gig relatively big venues with such as venues in camden and islington, iv got a boss chorus and OD pedal and im just wondering what else is needed!, im off to denmark street 2moz to buy a stack so any suggestions would be amazing, probs gunna go second hand as my budget is about 7-800 stirling pounds.I was looking at trace elliot, ampeg or most probably Ashdown..any thoughts and ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!..HELP!!

Actually on second thought you might be better off with a SVT-3Pro over an SVT becuase you could use one cab at a time if you didnt need both.
 
Yeah i was thinking of getting a head and then a 4x10 cab firs t and then a 1x15 when im doing larger venues and have room to move it!although we will be using a van to get to all our gigs my bedroom isnt too large....
 
For Indie stuff, I'd steer you towards Ampeg. SVTs are the amps I've been most satisfied with for that sort of music. Next would probably be the Ashdown. Traces are great amps, but you're going to have to wait until the end of the year for them to bring out their new line.

Have you thought about Orange amps? They might just have the vibe you're after.
 
Yeah ampeg is looking the best bet, the only problem is money. Id absolutley do ANYTHING for an orange amp as they are the dream amp for me but its all about money at the moment, im only a 17yr old student trying to fit in heavy gigging and practices with schooling, im currently selling off everything i own and dnt use to get this amp.lol.
 
Id say go with a b2-re. you can use that to easily power the SVT-410HE, and when you get the money you can buy another power amp and slave it off the b2 and power a SVT-115E. This will allow you to grow as money comes available to you, and be flexible for different size gigs.
 
I'd travel further afield than Denmark Street as well. Try the Bass Gallery in Camden and the Bass Centre in Brune Street.

i have to agree ... ampeg svt's + "fridge" are a super common combination for anything in the indie/punk realm.

in a thread a week or so ago many of us seems to thing that Stingray's really like Ampeg.

I have to ask why you Brits don't ever look at or mention Laney? I have been playing them since I started. They kind of got the Trace sound and what I have had has been very dependable.

My SR5 sounds great through it too.

I always found them a bit, forgive the expression, "meh"

I've only really played them in rehearsal studios when I've been too lazy to bring my own. Maybe they're better live?
 
Excuse me, it's spelled Hiwatt. According to their website Coldplay's Guy Berryman, and David Gilmour uses Hiwatt amps.
 
Definitely consider a used SWR Henry the 8x8 if you can find one. The 8" speakers project very well, and more importantly, develop very fast, so you will hear the same sound no matter if you are on a huge stage or standing right in front of the cab in a small bar.
 
my thoughts/opinions:

ashdown: cool, really loves the p-bass

ampeg: excellent, avoid any of the HE series cabs like the plague, if you get an ampeg cab, get an svt410hlf, it is, hands down, THE BEST cab for the size and money. tack a b4r on top of that and you rock for long time.

mesa, sweet, i use mesa amps and ampeg cabs:

gallien: lots of punch and bite, stay away from the backline stuff, it's garbage.



my best advice is to buy good or don't buy at all. there's no point in buying some lame ****ey amplifier when what you need is a good one that you can wait another few weeks to get........

I just luvs my Mesa 400+ with 4x10 & 1x15 Mesa Diesel cabs.
My Mesa Rig
Very versatile amp - I can use one or both cabs and select the necessary impedance. I turn the 1x15 towards the drummer to use as a monitor.
U.S. prices I paid for used in great condition:
Mesa 400+ = $750.00
Mesa 4x10 Diesel cab = $425.00
Mesa 1x15 Diesel cab = $225.00
Not sure how that lines up with your UK bux budget but I've never found a rig as sweet & phat. :D Good Luck

I am a meh bass player. My Laney will get me any sound I can think of and is plenty loud. It's all good and thanks for answering me dlloyd.


Maybe ya guys over there oughta consider cutting back to 110.
