Question Gloss finish on Classic necks compared to gunstock oil and wax

I'm hoping for some comments on the feel and playability differences between the oil/waxed finished necks in comparison to the high gloss polyester of the Classic series?
The oil finished necks is one of the things I love most about my Sterlings. But I've been lusting for a Classic Sabre. I'm mostly ok with the difference in 1.5" versus 1.625" nut width, but I'm a little iffy on the gloss finish being a bit too "sticky" for my tastes.

Anyone have experience with both that might chime in?
 
I prefer the natural finish (oil/waxed), but I never had any trouble with my classic. It wasn't that sticky. You can always use a little talc if it bothers you.
 
I was a bit sceptic on the painted necks too but as you i really wanted a classic series. Ok, playability of a oiled neck is top notch and imo nothing beats that. But i was pleasantly surprised when i got my classic sr4. Not sticky at all, altough it doesnt feel quite as smooth as my oiled ebmm basses. It does have the advantage its easy to maintain, no discolored maple. So i would say check one out and if you have to buy without playing, dont worry the necks feel great!
 
Never had a problem with the neck on the Classic 5. Frankly, I don't even notice the difference when I'm playing.

Exactly, the feel is verry different but in full action i dont really notice it, neck shape is way more important to me. Unless its a sticky gloss neck but with ebmm thats not the case.
 
Cool, thanks all. My pink paisley precision has a glossy neck that is noticeably "tacky". That's my only bass with a gloss neck and it bugs me a bit.. I'll have to try to find a Classic Sabre around here.
 
I have a glossy 1989 and a natural roasted 2012. Both are great players, like any MM instrument, but the glossy one gets tacky. However, this never disturbed me, but you should try it out.
