a demo on Saturday.

I haven't recorded with my SR4 yet and I was wondering whether I should put on new strings?

The current ones have probably been on a couple of months and probably won't "sing" that much now.

However, do you reckon my Ray might sound too lively and top ended if I put a new set on this near to recording.

I play finger style and we are recording Maroon Five's "This Love" and a Rolling Stone Medley, so I want fat bottom end but with some clarity.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Liam

In my band, we always put new strings on the bass before recording. Otherwise, the tone can be dull and 'farty'. You can always take away any 'edginess' from new strings with some EQ, but you can't add back brightness that was never there.

Just my 2 cents.

I would never put on new strings before going into the studio. Of course, I don't like the sound of new strings, either. If I were you, I'd take the bass as is, and take a set of new strings with you. Simply ask the engineer if he thinks the bass will track better with old, or new, strings. Then, you'll have plenty of time to change them while they set up and mic the drums. That usually takes a couple of hours. :D

That was my thinking. I've done lots of demo's in the past few years but never changed a set of strings so close to going in. Drummer is doing his thang today, so it should be interesting to see what he has left us with when we go in tomorrow morning.

I do like the zing of new strings, I just did some stuff yesterday with new Slinks on my Bongo and fretless SR5, with the Bongo I just rolled off the treble knob and there was still plenty of zing but not too much. I do like the way it does that, to still have hamonics going on to reenforce the fundamental and highs to cut through the mix but not in a "treble" kind of way.
just my 2-pence  :D

What a bunch of girls!

You see that is why I was "thinking" about it!

I am clearly confused about my sexuality.

I also change my strings before recording. I'm in line with Psychicpet's thinking. I would rather have the brightness to spare(I can alway*dull it down with the Bongo's eq) then not. The more I can work with the better. But then again I prefer a bright funky sound.

Totally! Unless they break, mine are on for life.

I always disliked the "zing" of new roundwounds, and was always happier when they deadened quite a bit, so when I switched to flats, I was in heaven.

My favorite time is when strings are about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks old... they still got the zing, but not too much...

I see you're from Pitt. How about those Steelers?!? :) :) :)

I thought I was the only 'Burgher on this forum.

I didn't even spot your location, kilgore777!

I am a native.. however, I'm no 'yinzer' (which, for the rest of you, is Pittsburghese for someone who speaks Pittsburghese).

Yeah, the big story in the news the other day was whether or not Ben Roethlisberger will be wearing a glove to play this weekend. Sad, eh? ;)

Kilgore, they're supposed to be opening a new Guitar Center superstore in Pittsburgh.. I heard part of a promotion last week but didn't catch the details. Do you know where it will be located? [I don't know if they'll keep the one in Monroeville or what?]

Hey Steve,

No, I don't know anything about a new GS opening.

Hope I don't insult anyone, but I hate that store. My experience is that the folks working there are mostly clueless. I went in asking for speaker cable and the guy handed me a guitar cord. Thanks for trying to make me fry my amp, ya moron! But, they do have a nice selection and good deals sometimes. I like P’n’S much better! The guitar doctor at Hollowoods’ is really good.

Nice to “meet you” though.

So, will he wear that glove or not….. the suspense is killin’ me!

Kilgore,

I bought my EBMM Petrucci through Pianos'n'Stuff. I've been dealing with them (and most of the other local stores) for decades. I had never been to the Monroeville GC until a few months ago when I was in the market for a Petrucci and wanted to play one before buying. I was impressed with the selection, and some of the prices were decent.

It's a shame that so few local stores carry any high-end instruments anymore. PnS, Hollowood and maybe Swissvale Music are the only places besides GC where you can see multiple guitars over $1000. And PnS and Hollowood don't stock much EBMM stuff. PnS has always has Stingrays, and right now they have an Axis and SUB1. Hollowood has maybe a bass or two and that's it. I've never been to Swissvale Music, but I see that they are an EBMM dealer.

I use the Guitar Doctor to do all my setups, but these forumites have got me wanting to tweak my own axes now.

Where in the area do you live? I'm in the North Hills.

Moondog: Yeah, we may have gotten lucky on that Jets game, but the rest of the season was another story. ;)
