Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have created a mechanical guitar playing robot, named the Crazy J. The guitar player is composed of two mechanical systems that interact to play a range of 29 musical notes. A plucking mechanism with six independently controlled picks is mounted over the body of the guitar and a fingering mechanism with an array of 23 fingertips is mounted over the first four frets of the fingerboard."

They may eventually be able to technically play it, but it'll never have intuition, or feel. Well at least not for a good long time. By then, I'll happily bow to our new robotic overlords.
 
They should have designed the fretting part of the machine in such a manner that it could traverse the fretboard along rails or something. That would enable it to play all over the neck without adding a lot more hardware. We'll get NorM on that.. he's a rocket scientist, after all.

Sounds like some engineering students had way too much time on their hands.... Did you realize that with 23 "fingers" this machine cannot do slides or bends? What about palm mutes?
Conclusion: you need human-like robotics arms around the guitar! :D
 
Takes "plays like a machine" to a whole different level.......jeez, with the amount of time it took to build it, they could have practiced! :rolleyes:
 
I heard it plays ridiculously fast. Turns out they actually modeled the thing after Steve Morse's bionic left arm. Same circuits and everything.

I graduated from GATech and I took the robotics class there as well. I desigined an automatic guitar tuner using an Ebow and stuff. It never really worked out.

Some of the stuff there looks familier. Engineering students there do not have to much free time
 
Yeah, but can it make fun of the drummer? What about throwing a tv out the window? And if it becomes a guitar hero what will the World Tour be called? The "Lock up your Fax machines" tour. And one other vital question does it come in sparkle?

Oh, that's funny! And by the way, I am not Malmsteen hater or lover. I actually saw him perform at the last G3, and you know what? The guy was damn impressive. Kind of stole the show, from my perspective anyway. And I'm a BIG Satch and Vai fan!
 
That's awsome... notw I won't ned to hire some other guitarist... now I just need amachine that plays bass and one that plays drums.
