I saw Roth doing the bluegrass version of Jump on Craig Ferguson on CBS. To me, the best part was the banjo player blazing out the keyboard solo.


Roth was too hilarious when he was talking about being an EMT in NYC. He said he was only recognized three times. One of those times, the injured guy asked him "Are you who I think you are?" and Roth tells him "Yeah, I'm the guy who partied with Eddie Van Halen and lived to tell about, and you gonna be just fine" :D :D


Although Roth's a complete maniac, he still cracks me up

I'm really, really, not a "Rock or nuthin'" snob. I like many styles. But that sucks.

I agree that at one point he was THE rock n roll frontman. I loved him with Van Halen and his Vai era stuff was pretty good. But that dude seems to be nothin' but a circus side show anymore.

Well i guess i am a fan of bluegrass so i can APPRECIATE the music ,but to say that a lineup up of great players like that sucks leads me to wonder what your pedigree is:confused: ?

So, does this mean that EVH himself had to authorize this "stuff" to happen, or would it have been just the record label? Perhaps Valerie Bertenelli had something to do with it...

Naah, all you need is a mechanical license to record a cover of an existing song. That's handled by attorneys and biz folks, so EVH probably knew nothing about it.
 
It's one thing for someone to bastardize great songs, it's another to do it to your own!!! :confused:

I think Dave's trying to get Ed's attention!

I'm with hbucker on this one.

Its not to say there is no appreciation for the players, they are world class. I'm a fan of country/bluegrass even when its mixed with other stylistic endeavors. The Chieftains Bluegrass collaberations "Down the Old Plank Road" and the follow up "Further Down..." are phenomenal albums. I'm even a John 5 bluegrass/shred fan (plus he got Albert Lee himself to guest on his most recent album)

It's the overall presentation. Watching the forced "Diamond Dave" I ain't got nobody personality trying to come back with his own 20-30 year old tunes rebent stylistically, but still played as cover versions, just doesn't do it for me. As I referenced in the general music discussion thread I kinda got the douche chills watching this.
 
I mean i Agree, DLR is a Nut but they are VH tunes and he DID have a hand in writing them so i guess i dont mind if he sings it in a different Genre ,no offence meant to anyone with my views on Talent ............i just thought it was interesting and wanted to share with my fellow VH fans i mean Diamond Dave was just as big a reason for their success as anyone else in the band , have you ever heard any of Mikey's Bass solos??????????????????? now there's sumpin to scratch yer head over!

My comment has nothing to do with Bluegrass as music or the musicians backing up Roth! Read the rest of my comment and I think it's clear what I think.

Roth long ago became a cartoon of himself.

Not only is my comment not about the musicians or the music. I actually feel sorry for the musicians in the video.

Lighten up please.

I think I would enjoy a tribute album by artists laying down their interpretations of classic VH. Had that been an instrumental track, I could have enjoyed it. I think Dave doing it, and not even doing a good interpretation of himself as early David Lee Roth (pre Diamond Dave gameshow host) is what doesn't work for me.
 
I would love to see the sales figures that are going to slap him in the face in a few months!!!! :p

I, too, appreciate the talent of the blugrass players. I think technically, the adaptations are very good, if not ironically creative, but I'm gonna get flamed, but I just don't think this crossover is tasteful. Of course, this is purely subjective...

Now, when EVH or Malmsteen takes an inverted triad that Bach would use and plays it in Eruption or even when Miles Davis covers a Michael Jackson tune, I think it can work. But this... not sure.
