I Recently Aquired A Hd-500 Head...and Was Wondering Howq A Person Can Tell If They Need To Replace Tubes..... And What Settings Do You Use On Yours...........thanks

when they become microphonic, meaning they pickup sounds from around them. a simple test is to have the amp on, not in standby, and tap the tubes(gently), if you hear a sound theyre microphonic and they need to be replaced. also loss of punch, clairty, headroom, and just general sounding ****ty are signs of tubes needing to be replaced.

It's generally a good idea to take any newly acquired tubed gear to a competent technician and have them go over it. Older tube stuff has a tendency to work, and even sound pretty good, even if there are parts that are just way out of spec. The filter capacitors in the power supply could be shot, as an example. They could literally explode at any time if that is the case. Other components out of spec could also cause a transformer to short. Some are cheap; some are exorbitantly unobtainable.
