why do some stingrays have the nobby bit between the D and A strings, and some have the nobby bit between the G and D strings?

They're called String Trees.

Pre-EB Basses had it on the D and G strings.

EB put it on the A and D because those 2 strings have the longest run to the tuners.

Man Gav, I'm glad you could answer him. I was having a hell of a time trying to figure out what a "nobby bit" was! That just didn't translate into Texan.
