Hello all! This is my first post.

This afternoon I took the plunge on a used Stingray! My first Musicman bass.

I'm a certified "P-bass + Flats" lunatic. I play instrumental funk fusion, but I love that John Deacon / Bernard Edwards tone! Hence, a Stingray was the obvious choice for a bass to backup my main ash/maple Fender USA P. I had the shop string this bass up with my preferred Fender 9050L flats, and a few notes was all it took!

THE TONE! THE TONE! Bowel-loosening punch. A fundamental so strong it could flap pant-legs a mile away. It's like this bass was designed to seduce the P-bass lover.

I haven't got it home yet so I can't check serial numbers and production dates... but it has rounded polepieces and a regular non-compensating nut. So does that make it about 3 or 4 years old perhaps?

Anyway, great condition.. and it comes with both a white and black pickup cover.. so I'm going to go for black - for that John Deacon look! :)

Anyway, just wanted to say hi and tell someone about how happy I am with my new Stingray!

Here's a pic from the shop this afternoon. More nicer pics to come (if anyone is interested..!)

Thanks for the welcome

Thanks for the warm welcome all!

WHITE PICKUP COVER ALERT!!!

You know that you're holding something in hands that officially does not exst!!

Well... I'm really gonna have to think hard now about changing out the cover to black! Actually, I've already promised to send this white cover to a good friend of mine who is also a member here... maybe he might make an appearance in this thread if we're lucky! ;)

I guess because I come from P-bass roots, white covers aren't so appealing to me... this particular one shows a bit of wear from string contact under the G, and because it's white the wear stands out quite obviously.

Seeing that this is likely to be a bass made only 3 or 4 years ago, I wonder how it came to have a white cover? Perhaps an aftermarket purchase here in Japan?

Congratulations, nice bass!

Submit the serial number to Derek's thread at the top of the page and the EBMM crew will tell you the exact build date of your StingRay.

Hey, thanks all for the welcome messages! I'll be sure to post the serial number later on to get info on this bass's origins.

looks like thru body stringing which would make it a Stingray EX TB

Well spotted! Yes indeed it's string through body... but.. as far as I could see, it wasn't an EX model I don't think. Are the EX models clearly marked as being "EX" somewhere? I seem to recall seeing the "Made in California" bit on the back of the headstock. Once I get the beauty home, I'll post in the serial number database and see what dirt I can dig up.

Looking forward to posting more regularly here! Thanks for the warm welcome. :)

Stingray for Japan

Hands off that white cover, I've already got dibs on it !!

Well Knuckleheads, you may note that Bass Invader has determined from Dan on the serial number thread, that this ain't no MIJ EX, but a real deal USA model sent to the Japan market only. Hence the string through thing makes it a relative rarity.

Welcome Bass Invader. Beautiful and apparently rare snaffel. Well done. Sorry to hear about your desire to lose the white pup. Looks like it's going to a worthy cause though.
