Hello guys...I'm new here and i'm looking forward to my first electric guitar and i am keen on musicman's silhouette's special..The main attraction of it was the cool neck it has..but i can only get to try it out tmr when i go to the dealer. So I'd like all owners/non-owners of the silhouette special to give their opinions/problems of this guitar as i would really want to just stick to 1 guitar. I'm too poor to afford a range! haha. Another question i'd like to ask is..what is HSS and SSS? It beats me. Also..how would you compare this guitar with a Luke? Thanks for your opinions!

P.S: I'm SO EXCITED!!! :D

Timothy,

I play an Axis Sport and Super Sport, so I can't comment on the Sihouette. The HSS and SSS are the pickup configuration. HSS is Humbucker, Single Coil, Single Coil. The SSS is 3 Single Coils. Hope that helps.

First electric...WOO HOO!

Tim, I'll just add that if possible, try a few amps out with a few guitars, and spend whatever time you need to feel comfortable about parting with a pretty big chunk of change.

If they have a Luke there, definitely try it out. Go to the amp thread to get amp ideas if you need to.

Have fun, I always bring my tuner in when guitar shopping.

I really can't comment on the Silo, I have an Axis MM-90. I was comp[letely blown away by mine when I got it. I am sure which ever one you chose, you will be happy. I was always a huge fan of the Tele, I don't see myself ever buying one now though. You just can't beat top notch materials and the great ergonomic design of these guitars. Check out some used ones, luckily the resale value on these is prettty low.

BTW--Hambuckers avatar was taken at last year's Ernie Ball company picnic.

That's our good friend Jongitarz in back. :D

Gotta go...

I love my silo special, way versatile guitar with the HSS configuration, great neck, great sound and construction. I did change the pups thoughs so I have the sound where I want it to be, one of the main differences between the luke and the SS are the pups and of course the neck, I wasnt a big fan of the EMGs so the SS was for me, but the neck on both of them are great as they are very different, good luck with your decision -

Hm..went to the dealer today. They weren't offering try outs for the guitar but accepted orders only -_-". Man...now i gotta go to another dealer tmr..I think it's more of a showcase..I hope it'll be around the same weight as the strat. I also don't want to buy it on impulse when I haven't even tried it yet..so I just hope I've found a really good guitar with a great sound! Thanks for your help guys...I just hope the silhouette special impresses me as compared to other guits such as Fender :)

Tim, I was in your position about 10 years ago - looking at my first electric, I bought a Fender , then after a few years I bought a Silo - there is no comparison, you will love EBMM, it will ruin all other guitars for you.

Get a Sil or Sil Spec (Sil Spec if you're looking for the 3 single coils of a Strat), and you cannot go wrong. This is why I bought mine, to AVOID having to get a Strat.

Overall, you will not be let down. Now go, purchase young man...end of line. :)

I'll put in my two cents and recommend the sil spec as well. It's an awesome guitar, very easy to play, and really versitile. If you're considering any of the F*nder products then the Sil Spec is probably for you- it's a much better guitar. The quality of the body and electronics is superior and the necks are incredible! (Once you've played one and compared it you'll know exactly what we all mean.)

That said, all of the EBMM products I've played have been excellent - no exceptions. So within the EBMM family you can't go wrong ;)

Definitely consider the pickup combinations you're interested in. If you like the twangy or glassy sound of sigle coils than an SSH or SSS configuration would be good for you (the humbucker in the bridge would give you a little more "oomph"). If you skew towards heavier, distorted sounds than something with neck/bridge humbuckers (like a regular Silhouette or an Axis, for example) might be more for you.

Also consider whether you want a fixed bridge or one with a tremelo. Though, if this is your first electric then you might want to avoid one with a floyd rose bridge as they can take some getting used to.

Good luck!

argh.....Can't even find a single dealer who caries a SS in their shop!! I'm still looking for it...cos it's very diff. to place my money on the table without trying the guitar out unless it's a really really strong recommendation...oh..and it's my first electric FYI.

If you don't like it there are plenty of guys on this board that will likely take it off your hands for a pretty decent price.

I can almost guarantee it will play and sound better than any high end Strat

Timothy, where do you live maybe someone on the board knows of a place near where you live that has one. Or even better maybe someone on th board lives near you and you could try out one of theirs, just an idea.
