Help!.. the finish is cracking near neck

Not only is the finish cracking on both sides of the neck-body area, but it seems that it is de-laminating from the wood. This is happening on both sides of the neck cavity area of the body. I have a red translucent body, if that even matters.

Has anybody ever had this happen to a 4 year old Stingray before? What can I do to fix this? any ideas?

I would send photos but don't have digital camera yet.
 
I haven't seen this on any late model Stingrays but it's certainly a rather common feature on old Fender basses. There is something about that joint area that promotes stress fractures, although usually it's only a finish problem.

Cosmetically, it sucks, but it probably won't be anything more than a cosmetic issue. It is okay structurally?

The structure is fine. You are right, it seems to just be cosmetic on both sides. I don't know how old it is. (E18488).

how curious..

My Sterling, s/n F02921 is dated 9/00 and exhibits this same finish-separation at and around the neckplate as well as around the bridge. IE, where there is a high pressure point of contact between the steel plates and the finish, like many fenders indeed. My bass is Trans Gold, so maybe it's an issue with either that particular batch of polyester, humidity of the wood (ash), finish curing environment, sharp edges on the steel or fastener torque. At any rate, it is purely a cosmetic issue in my opinion, tho if it appears there was some mitigating situations in EB-Land that day, I'd be curious to know, as it does seem to cloud an otherwise impeccably built instrument.

Humidity.

Living in southern california, I am familiar with the very dry conditions out here around Sep-Oct. Dry Santa Ana conditions could have been the weather condition at the time my guitar was being finished. Who really knows? I would just love to fix it.

Not only does EB make the best bass guitars, but they also have the world's best CUSTOMER SERVICE. They are going to repair the cracks in the finish for me the right way. Thank you Thank you Jon and EB.!!!!
 
Good as new!

Just got my guitar back from the boys at EB. I want to thank Jon very much for fixing this problem for me. It is so great to have it back after 3 long weeks looking brand new and pristine. You guys are they BEST and really do stand behind your quality products.

This is just amazing. Other "big" companies could learn a lot from you guys at EB.

I have six EB basses right now, and am awaiting my seventh - a four string Desert Gold dual bucker Bongo.

Oh yeah - this is my second Bongo! People think I have a little bit of a problem, that I'm addicted to EBMM basses, but for my money, there are no better basses and no better company on the planet.

Kudos to you guys!
