Hello all, i was just wondering, since this is the Ernie Ball site, how do people feel about the EBMM JP guitars? I love the look but the cost is way out of my range. Does anyone know anything about the OLP version, please share your thoughts if you have any.

I posted this a while back. I did a cost comparison of what it would take to make the OLP a little mo' better. Turns out that the neck contour isn't the same either....in the long run it;s worth it to hook up w/ a JP w/o all the bells and whistles (piezo , inlays, matching head) because you're still getting a killer guitar for the cash.
 
First off, Welcome to the addiction....you have come to the best guitar forum period. All here are easy to get along with and the knowledge that is shared here is phenomenal!

OLP....sorry, I owned the Axis version, used it for a road guitar for when I travel on business......don't have it anymore....long story.

Dude,

Save up the cash and get the real deal.

I just placed an order for a Petrucci w/all the options, and the price I paid (at an honest dealer) including tax was less than Guitar Center's "sale price" for a basic Petrucci with no options (and probably without the case that actually comes with it).

If you can't afford it, keep saving until you can. It will be worth the wait. Go play one for yourself and you won't need further convincing.
 
Thanks for al the coments, I do have to rely on comments a lot since i live in Vermont, and we don't exacly have a Guitar Center or a place that would have a OLP or EBMM. I will never get the chance to play one unless i make a 7-10 hour drive to the nearest location with one of those guitars.

I do welcome any thoughts about the guitars since i may be purchasing one without playing it, even though i know that might not be the best way to do things, i do'nt have much choice.

I play on the heavier side of things, i'm strung with 13's right now, i'll probabl stick with 10's-12's to get a good detuned sound. I like the stuff from DT's ToT album!
I love to do harmonics and "sqeals" with real clarity. The guitar i will buy WILL be used as my #1 guitar so it needs to be good. I am willing to buy the OLP and do some wiring and pup and other upgrades if it will sound good. I don't necissarily want to buy the EBMM just becuase it's the original version cuase cash is real tight. I've been saving for this whole summer and i have about $500-600 total to spend on a guitar. to save for the EBMM would mean at least December and a P.O'ed mom, she doesn't like me spending this much money. I'm also in the need for a Power amp and cab.

Please let me know if the OLP would meet my requirments, i need many opinions so i can make a good disition.

Hey, does anyone know if the OLP is wired the same as the EBMM?

I didn't think it was but then someone on another forum suggested that it might be.

Well you have enough to get a SUB 1 with a trem, I just got one and to me, for that kinda money, there is no guitar that comes close...the action is sweet, and the neck/frets...the fastest I have ever played...I took like a 10-15 year sabatical from electric guitar, and after picking up this guitar, it actually feels like I never took a break...in fact I am doing things I have never done berfore...I was going to reccommend the SUB1 earlier, but I wasn't sure what you were after...now that I know, I think you should seriously consider a SUB1. LIke I said, I tried over 50 guitars on the day I went to exchange my ESP (the truss rod was ineffective for further adjustments). I tried guitars that were higher priced and ones within the same price range, and none of them, even came close. In fact it was like playing a 2000.00 custom made guitar, then trying out a 250.00 guitar from Indonesia...look I am a metal head thru and thru, and at first glance I was put off by the SUB 1's looks, but beauty comes from within, and this baby is gorgeous. She sounds so crunchy and deep, and I am playing thru my Marshall, with no pedals or rack effects whatsoever. I plan on upgrading the pups soon, but truthfully, it isn't necessary at this point in time! I wish I could provide you with a sound clip!
 
Raz is pretty much on the $ right here. For the cash outlayed for the sub, you get a smokin' piece. Then save until you can get a real Petrucci down the road. The OLP is made more or less as a beginner type piece. One of the Interviews I posted w/ JP a while back makes light of that. I agree tho' in that I think it's cool that kids starting out have an alternative to the LTDs, and Squires that are out there. But I digress, if you're going to be doing real playing you'll get better tone and way more mileage out of a EBMM SUB than the OLP.
 
Can we take this further then...and what I mean is this:
I was checking out the full line of EBMM guitars and, well first off they are all beautiful, but what's the natural progession for someone like me, or the guy posting...what is the difference between all of those guitars...is it price, is it style? Truthfully speaking though, I got rock hard when I saw that JP 7 string...ouch!
 
Progression? If you mean moving from one EBMM to another, there is none. Each one offers it owns personality. I mean, I play strictly JP's, but when Kbaim brought over his Axis SS, I could not put it down. I have to get one now! I have two Jp-6 and one JP-7. These are the guitars that work for me. Based on feel at first because I never really got into Dream Theater. Now, JP is probably one of my biggest guitar influences, but the guitar itself sold me, not the signature on the headstock. Just like the Axis, has it's own voice. If that is what you mean, there is no progression. Other companies have low end models (F-der, gibby) that you can "move up" to higher end models. Not EBMM. I believe the SUB is their cheaper guitar, but is not low end like a Squire or BC Rich starter pack. That axe blows away most high end models of said companies in my opinion. I hope I did not get off track here, so let me know if I rambled on for no reason... ;)
 
Hi..I'm old here, but I am old everywhere :rolleyes: I agree with Koogie. All our guitars are different and have something different to offer. From the Albert Lee to JP's and all the others, each has its own personality. Try as many as you can before you buy. There is something for everybody.
