Well, I have been lurking for about a year now, but more so in the last couple of months. I have become obsessed with my Music Mans. I hardly ever play any of the others. I guess you could say I have caught the bug. I am sort of in the market for a vintage Ray. I know I will have questions for some of the vintage Ray experts on here, so I may as well make an impression.

Instead of or maybe in addition too, I would recommend going the ultra modern musicman route. Try looking into the Bongo or maybe a new dual pickup Stingray or Sterling. Add even more variety/versatility to your lineup.

Yeah. That is why I really need to do my homework and soul searching. The quality on the newer EB's I have is excellent, and I will be buying a dual pickup SR5 when they start hitting the stores no doubt. I have never played a pre-ernie Ray, so I don't really know what I am missing.

Old rays are fine, but new EBMM basses are better. Better bridges, better neck attachments, better qc, cooler colors, more pick ups, and very important:no dings, scratches or anything.
The only reason I'd buy an old MM would be for the possible collector's value...

I see that you have an Alembic in your collection. I've always been intrigued by Alembics (but less so now that I have my EBMM). How would you rate the Alembic against your MMs? (I guess this is probably an "apples vs. oranges" comparison...)

The Alembic Orion 5 was my first 5 string bass. It has great tone and all, but the pickups tend to be noisy when around dimmers or when the electricity is not properly grounded, where the music mans are dead quiet. The fretboard is also significantly wider the SR5. The SR5 neck is perfect for me. The Alembic tends to be a bit boomy in the bottom, where the SR5 is more balanced. Having a 3 band EQ is a big plus compared to just the 2 band on the alembic (My Alembic has volume, pickup blend, low and high). The Alembic has more tone selection compared the the single pickup SR5, but in a live situation, I usually stick to 1 sound anyway. I hate messing with knobs during a show.
Overall the Alembic is great if you are doing rock/heavy rock live, or if you need a soloed bridge pickup burpy sound. It is a bit lighter too.
The MM's are great for everything from rock to pit orchestra to recording. I was schooled on a P-bass so it feels more at home. It's always my first choice.
