So I was thinking about the holy grail of tone and different ways to get there and I stumbled upon the following question... What if MMs where passive or you could have the option of having that passive-active switch... How many of you would want one of these or buy one of these... For anyone whos had the chance and I assume most of the old time posters in this forum have... You know and can hear the difference between an old good passive bass and a new bass with active electronics...

I sure as hell would buy a bass with a push pull switch... A passive bass not so sure.

Some of the EBMM SUB's were passive. I actually just sold my SUB5 that was passive. I thought it had a very warm tone. I loved it. In fact, if EBMM ever decides to sell a passive bass or sell one with a push pull switch, I'd be all over it like white on rice. If it sounds anything like my SUB5 did, I know I'd love the tone. I think EBMM could grab a bit of new market by making passive basses or basses with push/pull switches, but I'm pretty sure I heard somewhere it wasn't in consideration.

A guy can dream though, can't he?

I know some subs were passive, but no real rays were... never was sure if the passive rays were a cost issue...

The concept of a passive Stingray or Bongo doesn't excite me at all. To me, the Musicman sound is defined by the magnificent active electronics. If I need passive, there are a billion Fenders that do passive quite well.

I think passive was offered as an option for the early StingRays?
The idea sounds neat, I'd try it.

I wouldn't think of it as tone option (just me), but something I'd use on a gig, mulitple sets, where I'm not yanking my chord out of the bass, so when I'm having a beer inbetween sets..I wouldn't be looking at my bass on stage thinking "Now when did I get that battery"..and if the battery (batteries) does go down...well, I'm not SOL. But I've been fine all of these years without it.

It could be an option to consider. However, it wouldn't be a make it or break it option for me and I wouldn't run out and buy a new model just because it had it.

A humbucker in the bridge (treble) position won't do so well in passive cut only mode methinks. And I love my bridge humbuckers!

What I've learned since discovering da Bongo in 2005 and on this forum is this:

The brain trust at EBMM know what they're doing. People try to reinvent their wheels all the time with "helpful" suggestions on how to change this or that and how awesome that would be.

Trust me...BP, Dudley and crew are smarter than we are when it comes to designing and building basses that sound amazing.

Now, if you don't believe that and want to buy a MM bass and install your own switch, hey, have at it! Hope it works out for you.

Me...I know I'm in good hands with Ballstate.

I played a passive SUB...it was pretty nice...kind of a chewy tone.

I like my active SUB more but if I found a passive SUB for sale at a good price i would likely pick it up to have as a rehersal room bass...
