Just keep playing. After a while all that grime will build up a nice layer and you can call your bass "vintage" ;)

Here's a site that'll help.

http://www.jemsite.com/tech/3other.htm

I cleaned my RG550 using this, it works

I use lem-oil and a 3M sanding sponge.

Lem oil

Lemon oil is what most luthiers use on fretboards. At least the ones I´ve talked to. Why should lem oil be a no no on maple fretboards? I´ve never heard that. Would be interesting to know.

It's only a no-no if you don't wipe off the excess afterwards. I use orange oil, which is a good all purpose cleaner and conditioner. Maple isn't as porous as rosewood, so while it cleans the maple board very well, it doesn't soak in, so a good wipe with a dry cloth after cleaning is all it needs.

Or use EBMM Wonder Wipes.

Definitely do a search and you can find waaay more info.
Ernie Ball Wonder Wipes do the trick though! Use the Fretboard conditioner ....
Cleans and revitalizes the neck. Orange, Jojoba and linseed oils .. like sweet necktar ;)

I had heard the same thing about lemon oil on maple - that it would dry out the wood and may even cause problems with frets no longer seating properly, but I cleaned my Axes fingerboards with Murphy's Oil Soap, then wiped the maple fingerboards using lemon oil. I made certain I wiped off all the excess, and I haven't encountered any problems with that method yet...
