How to make your Axis' Floyd Rose a floating tremolo

Did you ever wake up one morning, pick up your favorite ebmm Axis, do a couple of dive bombs with that trusy Floyd Rose licensed tremolo, then suddenly wonder if there was was more to life than this?

I dropped off my Axis today to be routed out to make the tremolo float. Jim from Noll Guitars in Rhode Island is doing the work. The guitar is a keeper, and I always wanted an Axis with a floating Floyd. Jim said it wil be ready next week.

A very logical mod! If I ever want a Floyd equipped guitar again, it should be floating.

WOW! When I sold her to you I didn't know you would take a router to her! That's heavy. As you know, I am a big floating Floyd fan (sh!t ton of original Silh's and Luke1's) -- looking forward to seeing how this comes out. Will be curious to see how he finishes the route so it matches the top. Good luck man!

Did you try shimming the neck route first, or ask to angle the neck route? A simple shim placed on the body-end of the neck route will lower the neck angle, allowing you to raise the Floyd. I had an old Charvel with no back route on the Floyd, but a good range of backpull due to angled neck pocket. Seems less obtrusive than routing the top!

i did a neck shim to my y2d without the route - and these are only stock models.

Like others, either a floating Floyd or no trem for me. A router is a really scary move. I hope the clear coat doesn't crack or anything.

I didn't cut into the Black Magic Axis because her days are numbered. I'll only mod a keeper. I'm going to trade in the Black Magic Axis for an ebmm bass (I'd like a fretless with NO lines) so that my son will have one to play when he comes over. They stay at their mom's house most of the week.

Hi Jeff, I was wondering if you'd regret selling her to me. I am keeping this guitar, so I figured I may as well tweak it a little. I asked Jim to leave the route unfinished so that the wood can breathe. I also gave him a set of Floyd Upgrades noiseless springs.

I never tire of looking at your guitar gallery. It is impressive every time. I have a LNG 1987 Jem that I'll never let go of. Those first year Jems are ugly, but sure played and sounded great.

Thanks @rad! But I gotta say, my '87 Shocking Pink JEM doesn't hold a candle to just about ANY of my EBMM guitars. I can fit an American Express AND a Visa card in the neck pocket, and the finish has factory runs in it! I can say without a doubt that I have never seen an EBMM come like that. Maybe the ones that Steve handled and signed (the LNG's) got the extra QC that my SK didn't get!

Mine's amazing. No question about that. Andy Timmons played it about 15 years ago and was blown away by it. I don't play it but every few years. My EB's get all the love.
