I'm thinking of getting a 20th anniversary silhouette but I cant decide on whether I should get a string thru or the vintage trem. I have a jp7 and I like that trem but I wanted opinions on this trem. Also do you think the string thru will give me a significant increase in sustain and resonance?

I love my hardtails BUT i do have a ASS with a Vintage Trem and NO tuning problems at all! i love it best trem i have ever had you can actually use it and the guitar stays in tune

No quite the reverse! Despite what you think, the trem adds a resonance to the guitar. CandidX did a great post on this a couple of months ago - use the search facility to read all about it

Also I bleed Norrin Radd did a demo video showing how rugged the MM trem is and how it stays in tune.

I agree! I don't know why, but the vintage trem seems to add sustain. It's the opposite of what I've been told all my guitar life, but playing is believing.

I'd say the sustain/resonance issue would be second to how you intend to play the guitar. If you like using the trem or think you will in the future, get a trem. The only real downside is the added weight.
 
Honestly, if you have the trem version and you find you dont use the trem, just lock it down. The tuning is as stable anyway if they are locked down.

:p I'm not so sure (and can't prove it) but I don't know whether it adds quite so much weight - after all there's quite a bit of wood routed out. If only we could get two body blanks from the same piece of wood , add a trem to one, hardtail the other and weigh them for comparison. It would go someway to answering this!
But then somebody would pipe up and say "ah but no two pieces of wood are identical."

I dunno, (shakes head ) to resolve this, I'll leave it to someone with far more knowledge on this than me!!!:o
 
hardtails look cooler, you get more cool colour to look at on the back! I love seeing those little holes and not a big trem cover.

have you seen a 20th silo around? I hope you know that you cant order them anymore, so you'll have to get what you can find.

While the materials that make up the guitar play a hand in the overall tone, the number one thing with an electric guitar is the interaction between the strings and the pickup.

I'm sure you could split hairs over tonewoods, type of bridge, what type of metal is used, etc. I've got a hardtail and a Floyd, and I can't tell a difference in terms of sustain between the two.

Then again, I am partially deaf.
 
Just like Beej said ... if you think you're going to use it in the future, get the trem !
There are no downsides !

I set mine against the body for down only on my silo spec so that i can go down to Drop-D easily !
 
Yep depends if you use it a lot or not

The Music Man vintage trem is cool and I like it better than my Strat vintage trem for instance.

On the other hands I like their Hardail model as I feel it adds more resonance to the guitar

but as Robelinda pointed you may not have the choice and take what you will find as this guitar isno longer in production :(

I second that. My sub with the trem seems to have a little more sustain and resonance than the hardtail, but they are both GREAT! and it's a hard decision. Splitting hairs is right.

I do favor the trem though.....

I loved the vintage trem on my Al...i was really worried about the ability to stay in tune, but it performed VERY well...i'm glad my Dargine Al will have a trem too!
 
Thanks guys..being that I'm a floyd rose player and like to do all the tricks and stuff, I'll probably get the trem one if I find it. Doesnt this guitar have a mahogany tone block or something. If so, then is the brass block still there.? I didnt even think you could pull up on the vintage trems..thats a plus.
