I just found an EB Axis EX for sale here in Osaka, and I wasn't quite sure what the EX designation was. I'd appreciate it if someone could get back to me soon, the price seems really low and it will probably get snapped up pretty soon.

Hi, welcome aboard. :)

The EX means that it is an Axis trapped in an EVH's body, so to speak. EBMM refers to it as an Axis, but the guitar itself is fashioned using the old EVH style body (minus the contour on the back, pickup selector near the bottom horn, etc.) The wood choices should be the same (basswood body, maple top), and the specifications should be the same as well, though the quality of the wood may vary, but don't hold me to that. I realy am not sure (anyone wanna pipe in here on that one?)

My understanding about this instrument also is that the bodies and necks are made in Japan, and the hardware, are shipped to them from EBMM here in the US, per Derek in a previous post.

I would grab it, if I were you... :)

Actually, I'm pretty sure the body and neck were made in the US too - the guitar is just assembled in Japan from all US parts - not that the Japanese don't make great guitar parts, but the EX really is an Ernie Ball, except it doesn't have a patented Jongitarz uber-setup... ;)

jongitarz works at the EBMM shop in Cali. He comes on the board to help us out and keeps us in line... ;) He sets up some of the guitars for people and helps them when there are issues with their guitars. Just so you know....EBMM Customer Service is second to none. Gibby and ***nder will NOT give you the service and "Rock Star" treatment like these peeps! BTW...jongitarz sets up John Petrucci's guitars and he will fix yours (if need be) like you were JP. He is the man and a very appreciated one at that by many on the forum...... :D

The only difference between your guitar and a normal Axis is that the neck is a little thinner and your pickup selector is on the old place on the right hand side as opposed to under the volume knob...other than that your EVH and a normal Axis are the same...but wow you're getting this for a really good price plus those are really hard to find so good job man :D

I'm still waiting for the AXIS EX to arrive. Meanwhile I located an AXIS, so I'll have a chance to compare them side by side. If anyone is interested, I'll post the results. Thanks for all the feedback. I wish there were sites like this for some of the other guitars I own. Then again the other guitars I own don't seem to inspire the rabid following that Ernie Balls do. Does this mean that I'm moving in the right direction?

Drop D,

please post your comparisons between the two. I have an Axis and will be finally (long story) getting my hands on an Axis EX at Christmas.

The AXIS for comparison hasn't arrived yet . . . but . . .

This baby rocks! I've spent the last 30 years playing Gs and Fs. I used to have a collection of 1957-60 LPjrs, old strats and I still have a few LPs and SGs etc. What the hell was I wasting my money on??? My guitar of the moment (until the AXIS came) was a rare handmade '86 Spector neck-thru with a middle pup sound to die for. The AXIS EX thrashed it on every setting with and without effects. I A/Bed them through my rig (Soldano SP-77 preamp & Groove Tubes Dual 75 power amp), when I switched to the AXIS my girlfriend (who doesn't know s*** from Shinola when it comes to tone) called out "What'd you do? That sounds great!" I told her that I had bought a new guitar. Then she came in and told me how pretty it was. Believe me, that isn't the usual response I get when I buy a new guitar.

I spent the day taking photos of my guitars (including the Spector) and getting boxes and tape sorted out. You got it. I'm selling the lot. I'm getting some cash together to buy some more of these: piezo super sport, and back up axis just like the one I got . . . for starters.

dd

PS. When I get the AXIS, I'll A/B them and post the results.

. . . I wish I could have those 30 years back . . .
