i'm thinkin'........direct is the ticket

and i don't mean a flight on a plane.


....have a 1x15 combo that i run w/ my 2X10 combo.........mic it all up and all is good.

2 mics into my fostex........(i know......but wait'll i finish)

take that recording........dump it into pro tools 7 and.......well you guys know ....


great sounds from the Sterling this way.........more,.........no......waaaaaay more than happy.

BUT!!!!

i've recently started going direct into my m-audio board,right to pro tools.

man..........this bass kicks the hell out of a live mic.......the tones that this bass is producing are just stunning..............*i never new*

always been a big fan of live mics.


......i might be a changed man now.


what do you guys prefer when recording......live or direct?

I'd recommend recording both ways. That way you can combine both mic and DI if needed...

yep, whenever the time has allowed a blend is great but most of the stuff I've done has all been direct. Try out an Avalon U5 DI.......... !!!!!! amazing box.

i plug my sr5 striaght into the board stick on the head phones and i am there,the bass sounds great on its own.the on board pre amp is second to none.

I prefer direct.

We recorded my bass on our last album direct with an Avalon DI and some other Apogee stuff as well.
Then we experimented with reamping the bass when all the parts were recorded.
So we could try different setups with different amps/mics etc.

Basically you re-record your bass signal through different amps and stuff.
Then you can blend the signal our choose the reamped versions of the tracks. That gives you a lot of control over the sound.

But hey. It still comes down to playing very well in the studio.

Just finished recording direct with the 30th Anniv. and it sounded killer. I usually go direct as long as I can use a good tube buffer or my Demeter. I prefer the cleaner sound of direct without the numerous extras that can come by recording live. To each his own though. I have done live to 2 back in college and have heard others do live recordings that I would have sworn were direct.

Like you said, just experiment to find what you like best.

I think recoring direct an then reamping is very cool if you have the time and gear... or record direct digitally and use some GuitarRig later during mixdown.
