JP Neck Ding

Does Jon or anyone have any insight on how to repair a ding in a neck of a JPMM guitar? It is very small. The neck is a painted one. Any help appreciated.

Hi DGillis..

When you say the neck is painted, do you mean it has a matching headstock? (i.e. the head of the guitar is painted to match the body), or did someone actually paint the back of the neck of this guitar (like the SUB guitars)?

The JP guitar from Ernie Ball ships with an unfinished neck.. you can get paint on the headstock as an option, but not on the neck. Just trying to clarify! And welcome!

Yeah..How you deal with a ding depends on where it is on the neck/headstock.

Thanks guys for replying. I tried to get a picture, but the ding would not show very well. Yes, I do have a matching mystic dream headstock. It looks as if there is a coat of clear around the entire headstock including the unpainted portions. The ding is on the edge of the headstock on the unpainted portion near the G string tuner. The ding involves a compression deformity of the wood under the clear coat. You can barely feel it. It measures approximately 3-4 mm.

Should I just not worry about it? I obsess over all my guitars!!!

By the way, Jon Im sure you answered this somewhere, but why in the FAQ section of setting up the JPMM does it say to "straighten the neck" when there is buzz from frets 5-12? This sounds counterintuitive.

I would just learn to live with the ding....I will have to look into the FAQ section and check that out....If you have buzzing in that area, you want more relief in the neck. Above the 12th, less relief.

ahh, I may have to straighten the neck of mine further then. The action is pretty low up there, but I have a slight buzz at about fret 14. You can't hear it through my amp however.

How low does JP have his action Jon? Also, how low do you go with the action, on a set up job?

Mine is at about 1/16 at the minute, on the 1st string, and a tad higher on the 6th.

If you can't hear it through the amp, why mess with the set up? Every electric guitar with low action will buzz acoustically. JP's guitars have very low action...about 1/32 at the 12th fret. They buzz unplugged. If you are happy with the way it plays and it doesn't fret out when you bend a note, leave it, IMO.

ok cool man. you make some good points.

I would like it a little lower ... how do I go about this? Just keep lowing the saddles? The bridge is flush on the bass side, and a tiny bit lower on the treble side.

Is it all about the saddles?
