So I followed the directions below and the guitar feels so much better... first i applied and removed the Birchwood Casey Gun Oil and then repeated with the Gun Wax. After playing the AX40 for 45 min, the fretboard didn't show any signs of coloring... wow... so fantastic... I highly recommend this to anyone with a coloring problem on your maple EB MM's.

Since the neck is unfinished, it can be more susceptible to humidity changes. An annual (or so) dose of gunstock oil will help to keep the neck maintained; we use and recommend Birchwood-Casey Tru-oil, but any good quality gunstock oil will work.Clean the neck first. Use a small amount of Tru-oil, leave it on for 5 minutes, then wipe it off with a paper towel. After that, apply Birchwood-Casey Gunstock Wax. Be sure to douse the paper towel with water before disposing of it! Read the wax and oil manufacturer's instructions regarding disposal of these used paper towels.

Ok so... I spent more time eith the guitar and it looks like the staining still does occur. It's a lot less but it still happens. Total bummer

The thing is, maintaining the neck does not necessarily imply that it will keep it free from getting dirty.

The gunstock oil treatment will help to *maintain* the stability of the wood and help it from developing any cracks and such that could be caused by it drying out.

I find that simply cleaning the fretboard of my maple fingerboard MM guitars does wonders. I do this during string changes. Yes, it can get dirty with lots of use.....but it doesn't tend to stay that way.

I like the way the neck changes colors as I play it in more. I still like it clean, but I think it's cool that it tends to get a bit darker over time. My 2 cents.

The ax40 has a light poly finish, so to do the oil wax finish you have to sand the poly on the neck and fretboard to bare wood then apply the oil wax finish.

My Axi' are a totally different color to when they were new. Lots of rocking made it change color!
