Laquer Finish

I think this is an old topic, but does anyone know when Music Man stopped using laquer on their Stingray's?

I have a January 1980 Music Man catalog that states "All instruments are finished exclusively with laquer. Alternatives, such as polyurethane and polyester tend to stick to the skin ......".

I own a '78, '80, and '83 Stingray and the gloss finish on all three feel the same to me. Am I mistaken? Does anyone know definitively when the factory quit using lacquer? Anyway, kudos to Music Man for using lacquer long after "The Other Guys" switched.

I've seen 77s and 78s with poly so thick that it was bulletproof.

There were some problems, I seem to recall, with that thick poly, too....details escape me now. Finish cracks, maybe.

I'm not saying that laquer wasn't used....but my 4-5 examples were definitely poly finishes.

I belive Laquer can not be used in California any longer?

Maybe that accounts for why the finish goes soft and rubbery and eventually scratches off the sweaty places .... expecially in tropical climates.
