Here is a question for you chaps.

Until recently I was a EBMM maple neck snob. I loved my purple EVH so much that I would not get another MM that did not have a maple neck. I thought it was inferior.

But then I got my EBMM Axis SS trans orange with rosewood board. It plays the arse of my EVH and sounds fantastic.

Are guitarists wanting to look good with tons of birds eye maple at the expence of a better playing guitar???????

I'd take rosewood 9 out of 10 - especially on a strat or strat type. The only maple neck I own is my EVH, and if it had been offered at the time with rosewood, I would have had rosewood (I have no desire for an Axis - my EVH is fine as it is). I like Dans new rosewood Axis, but have said on here before - they need to offer the all rosewood neck with a nice maple top - it would look a lot better - 1 vote for rosewood here,

Personally I find that if I've been playing a maple fingerboard exclusively for a while, I play better when I pick up a rosewood.

Likewise, if I've been playing a rosewood fingerboard exclusively for a while, I play better when I pick up a maple.

I think the moral of the story is to have guitars with each kind of fingerboard. ;)
 
I used to play only rosewood boards for yonks but then picked up my axis and immediately loved it. Although now I'm really missing the rosewood and think I will stick to that from now on.

I think maple is the way to go for screaming rock tones and big solos, but rosewood just feels better to me and i think it gives a smoother/slightly warmer sound which is perfect for those big Brian May style bends with tons of sustain. :D

+1 for the rosewood (or ebony or pau ferro for that matter :cool: )

I personally prefer the look, feel and sound of a maple fretbaord over the rosewood (if given a choice).

looks - I guess it's more traditional and clean looking. But more specifically I don't like matching headstocks 9 times out of ten. I also think the guitar looks a little funny if the whole thing is dark in colour then has this little maple headstock at the end.

feel - I like the feel of the maple better. I'm not sure why. If blind folded, I could tell the difference unless heavily laquered.

sound - I know this is the great debate, but I do enjoy that slight more snap or twang that can sometimes be achieved.

I do wish that guitars such as the Petrucci, Luke, etc. came with the maple option.
So, yes. I am a maple snob! I'm trying to change my ways! :cool:

For awhile I felt that maple was faster than rosewood, but dang maple is hard to maintain, so being the lazy slob that I am, Rosewood :D
 
one of my favorate pass times is voodoo bustin......
take the blinfold test sometime........
take 12 guitars same model & configuration except 6 are maple & 6 are rosewood....
blindfold yerself...& play them all thru the same rig with the same settings....
& try to sort them by only listening to them . my money says nobody can do it.....
some will sound better than others......but it will won't be very dependant on the fingerbaord.
coupling is my fav. guitar voodoo ingredient.........but that's another thread.......

I am also a Maple Snob! I don't know why, we always just got along better than rosewood. I've owned several rosewood neck guitars, but I've alway preferred maple. Not to mention the maple on my EVH guitar, which is also the best damn feeling neck I've ever encountered.

I have to admit that in the last could of days I'm liking the idea of a rosewood fretboard on an all black on black with non matching headstock Morse!
Videos of Steve with Deep Purple and Tommy (in Delaware) pics have got me liking the look of this combination. :o

There are a couple of Black Morses out there for sale. If I wasn't able to reserve a Buttercream, Black was next on my list. I also thought that a Carbon Blue Pearl Morse would be a cool guitar to order, maybe with an Abalone Pickguard. I know it's the only "real" Morse color, but the Blueburst just ain't me.[Enabler suit off]

All of my basses (3) have maple boards. All of my guitars (5 plus the inbound Morse) have rosewood. I think the Maple brightens up a bass's tone and the Rosewood smooths out a guitar a bit-that's just the way I like 'em.
