How is it dreadful?

I swear--I don't understand why this thing is getting slagged so much in the forums. :confused:

It's obviously not designed for a blues gig. It's obviously not designed to be a "main player."

What's the big deal?


It appears to have been competently crafted. All of the lines are straight. The carving and routing on the top of the bass appear to be top notch. The finish doesn't look like it was applied with a brush.

What, exactly, is the harm in a custom one-off novelty instrument?

Maybe $1900 starting bid without anything other that novelty to back it up? And it's not even a finished bass! Right now it's not a player at all.

And on closer inspection the paint looks like crapola!

I appreciate the time put into the bass but charging close to 2 k for that thing is crazy. I personally think it's a lame design, but then again I'm not a comic buff. If you add up the materials for that bass it would probably be under $300(I'm sure its much less) and even if you consider the time spent carving the body the price is way high.
If I go to McDonalds and they charge me 50 bucks for a big mac with a ketchup drawing of the virgin Mary I'm gonna be pissed.

I was actually referring to the paint job on the finished guitar. That finish looks pretty good, so I assume the bass, once finished, would have the same level of competency.

I do question posting it for sale before it's done, though, I agree.

And, to me, poor eBay skills does not a bad instrument make. :D

As for the price--show me a Superman symbol shaped bass for cheaper. ;) Just because it's not worth $1900 to you doesn't mean a one of a kind instrument isn't worth $1900. Hell, I know 5 people who are Superman freaks (scary, but true)--none of them are bass players, though. And, Jerry Seinfeld and Shaq are both bonafide Superman nuts.

IMHO, asking $1900 for that bass is no more out of line than any other builder asking $2000 for a custom instrument. I think the prefab neck is probably a poor choice, but thats what it's got.

At the end of the day, "tacky" doesn't equal "dreadful."

Builder: "I have a great Idea. A Superman bass! We'll charge $1900 and split 2 ways."

Bassmonkee: "Well, I'm in as long as it has an Ibanez neck!"

I think part of the issue here is that it's not really a custom bass. The neck is off of an Ibanez. I don't believe that cutting, routing and painting a block of wood can anywhere near justify the starting bid that's being asked for.

That said, more power to him if he gets it. I think he would have been better served to have finished the bass and let the bidding start at what he had invested in it plus a little extra for his time. I still think EB should consider it for their next new "super" bass. :D

Man I gotta agree with Midopa, charge what you payed and a bit more. Now I'm not saying I would buy that, but if somebody gave it to me I'd sure as hell use it. B-monkee has a point, that this really is a one of a kind, plus it's the saem reason they can charge ten bucks for a bag of peanuts on an air-linel; where else are you gonna get peanuts at that height? Now then... Spiderman bass?!
