Can anybody tell me the last year they used the metal battery covers on the SR5's ?

Don't quote me, but I think it was 95.

I believe the plastic clip-in battery compartment was introduced in 1996 with the 20th Anniversay Bass. But I think some of 20th Anni's were actually built in 1995.
So, 1995 would be the year.
Some metal covers may have creeped through to 1996 but I can't recall seeing any.
