I have a 6 months old MM Petrucci, and recently I've found that the neck has gone in pretty serious backbow, I didn't notice it untill action on a guitar changed very drasticaly, it buzzes on first 5 frets (not a big problem) , till the 12. fret is low buzz-free, and after 14. fret to the 24. is almost unplayably high. Truss rod adjustment didn't work, is there anything I can do? I bought guitar secondhand , so I can't send it back for a repair. Thanks!

Try a "good" guitar tech if there is one in your area. After that, another "good" idea would be to call customer service and find out what your options are. Talking is free but the knowledge gained is a value. Even at twice the price

is the truss rod completely loose ?? (turned all the way til there is no torque on the threads counter clockwise as u look at the neck from the bridge )

Truss rod is almost completely loose, I can turn it with my finger, so I guess it is... "Guitar techs" don't want to touch it with a 20 foot pole, because they don't want to mess up something that expensive, and they think that it maybe would get back to normal by itself, so it's left pretty much to myself.
I cant get a new neck because it's secondhand, and it's not that bad to rip apart neck and pull out truss rod. Any sugestions? Thanx:)

u should call customer service.
while yer neck is not covered under warranty......i (think) they will sell u a new neck under the provision that they have your old neck.
they will probably prefer to see the whole guitar if u want the neck setup properly.
day's some good ole boys over there.....

Hi, guys

What a coincidence,
I have also got a MM Petrucci for about 6 months (also second hand). And few days ago I've noticed the same bug... I mailed Dan from EB Customer Service, he adviced that the best solution is that they have to take a look at my guitar. Well I also think that this is the best idea, but I am the second hand owner, no paper warranty ... I have just mailed him with question if it possible to send my guitar to the EBMM Service, it's not so easy because I come from Poland, you know this all shipping costs and god knows what else ... well ... I am waiting for reply, what to do, hope this problem can be solved.

And BTW:
Neskob ! Where do you come from? I am asking because we have now pretty frosty winter in Poland. In spite of fact I always keep the instruments in room temperature, maybe the weather conditions (I mean air pressure, air humidity) can affect ?

So... I am waiting for advices of Dan wishing you (and me) fast solution of our problem.

There's no easy fix to this problem. It can be solved one of three ways:

1) Heat/steam/bend the neck back into shape. I've had this done on a bad neck and needs to be done by a good tech.

2) Fret job to take into account the backbow. Only works if the bow isn't too serious.

3) Call EBMM and get a replacement neck. Best/longest-lasting solution. It's expensive, but that's what you need to do if you want the best solution. Guitar will play like new again.

Sometimes necks just warp. Wood behaves the way it wants to, and if a neck wants to backbow or tongue warp (twist from side to side), it's going to do it. It can happen on any brand of guitar, and does all the time. There are far more necks made that don't do it, than do, of course. ;)

I did not know the neck wasn't covered under warranty, however. Is this common practice among all manufacturers? I mean, that's half the guitar right there, and arguably the most important half. :D I don't think the body is going to warp or anything, so what is use in covering only that part of the instrument?

As far as I know, the entire guitar is warranted to the "original" owner for 1 year. This one was bought second hand, even though it's less than a year old.

I had an issue with mine which was covered under the warranty. If I recall it might have been a couple of weeks over the "year", but EBMM made good on it anyhow.

One of my favorite things about EB customer service (and I've needed them on a couple occasions) is their desire to please and their best efforts to make things right when things go wrong.

I also appreciate that when I call I'm not talking to some guy on the other end in pakistan who's impossible to understand. (Thanks for nothing HP)

... so even I am a second hand owner and the guitar is for example 2 years old I have to say : ...OK. **** happens... I've got to order a new neck ... Great.
Maybe that is the solution if I would have some cheap, crappy thing for about 200$. But I've got the Music Man Petrucci which is made for one of the most serious guitar players in the world. And buying this I was sure I bought full relible instrument , no matter it's brand new or 2 years old it should work perfect. I am sure that the customer service will finally help me to solve the problem. (i am still waiting for reply)I have heard that the EBMM customer service is one of the best (if not the best) CS in the world, well now it's time for me to not only hear about it but also experience it ...will see...

What preventive care should we exercise to make sure this never happens to our beloved EBMMs?
being exposed to low relative humidity is by far the biggest enemy.......
&..the thinner the neck.....the more it can have an effect.......
