mm sterling distorted output

hello everyone,
I bought my sterling about 7 years ago. ever since I bought it I have had problems with a low level distortion (mainly in the studio) when running direct. I think the problem is happening when it is run through the amp as well I just think it is a little less noticeable especially with all the other sounds going on when you play with other musicians. It seems directly related to how hard I pluck the string especially the E. I play with my fingers and I have not noticed this problem with other basses I have played. I have tried playing with a lighter touch which does help but it seems to me it is still there especially noticeable when monitoring a direct signal in the studio. The distortion is not the distortion of a dead battery.... it is just this distorted fuzz heard underneath the note. I am wondering if maybe the pickup is too close the strings I have never tried changing the height although I guess that would not be a big deal. I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what I might try to resolve it. any help would be much appreciated.

You may need to wind back the volume on the bass a little, as it sounds like the onboard preamp is a tad too hot for your amp. When going direct, use your mixing desk's channel gain control to hose down the input signal, or punch in the attenuation pad for that channel strip if the desk has one.
