More then 1 Bass or Guitar

For you guys who ask us or email me why do we need more then 1 bass or guitar
is silly,

As long as im alive and there still is wood too be found and Ernie Ball is cutting it l'll be buying it baby.

Many players have many intruments for many reasons, different sounds, different look. We only have too impress 2 people. Ourselves and the producers we work for.

Absolutely!! When you think about it, they are just basic necessities:

Fretted 4 string--check
Back up for above--check
Back up for back up--check
Fretless 4 string--check
Back up for above--not yet!
5 string--too many strings! Too confusing for neanderthal brain!
Strat--check
Les Paul--check (well, a copy of one)
Semi-hollowbody--not yet!
Acoustic--check

See? Just the basics! (At least that's what I try to tell the wife!)

I used to ask that question. Lord bongo Bovine straightened me out on how crazy I thought.

I still think I can do all I can with one. That is the one EB I have as I don't see it ever letting me down.

I will have more some day. Maybe even some day soon.

It's very simple for me. I've worked hard over the years, have a good job, no debts, and money in the bank. Bass playing is my hobby, so I buy gear because I can. If I needed the money, I'd sell everything I have in a heartbeat. It can all be replaced. For the record: SR4, SR5, Bongo 4HH, Sterling, MIA Jazz, Warmoth w/SD MM electronics, Ibanez Roadstar II, Ibanez EX350 guitar, and an Ashbory.

I only have 2 basses and its kinda making ends meet musically. I dont own an acoustic bass, upright bass, 5/6 stringers, or a fretless. It DOES get kinda boring!

I only had one old Pbass for many years. It was a nice one and I loved the feel of it.I didn't see the point in getting another bass and in the early years I couldn't generally afford one anyway. ( musician.....we used to drink and party a bit when we had some money too ) I wish that I had taken advantage of some of the deals that I was offered back in the old days. I had no idea that vintage instruments were going to become as sought after as they are today. I passed up quite a number of nice old basses that I could have bought at stupid cheap prices.....

so it goes....

now I have around a dozen basses. There is a reason for each one. They all sound different and yet they all sound similar when I play them. I think most of the sound is in your hands.

My Stingray holds the spot beside the couch and is the bass that I spend almost all of my time on at home. It remains one of my favourite basses. Sometimes I go through a honeymoon period with a new bass but I keep going back to that Stingray when it comes down to playing and practicing at home for the sheer joy of playing.

I went for many years with one bass too. It wasn't until very recently that it has become the norm to have a backup bass. About the only bass players that had backup basses were the ones in touring bands.

Guitar players carried backups in case they broke a string but bass players almost never broke a string before the slap/pop method came along. I've only broken one string on a bass and I've never had the "need" for a backup even though I've had one with me.

I agree with many of the comments above...I have come to a point in my life where I can afford to indulge my hobby a little (no '59 LP sunbursts for me!) Although I still gig ocassionally on the bass, the six-string stuff is purely for my own amusement. I don't really NEED it! (Shhh...that's a State Secret!)

Years ago, when I was making a (meager) living as a musician, I only had one Bass, a hot rodded Fender Bullet Bass (still have it). It was all I could afford and it served me well. I guess my point is that, for bass, there is nothing wrong with having just one quality instrument...How oftern do you break strings? Really? I had an aluminum neck Kramer years ago that popped strings all the time. Something about the bridge. But since then, I have not broken a single one...(then again, I ain't no Mark King, if you know what I mean!)

Well, you can call me a joker (of course, I still have that old korean crap I was using before, but considering what my other bass is, I can't considere it as a back up). But a a serious and happy joker : i'm using a bongo 4 HH.

Next money will be for good amp and cab.

I play with different basses for the same reason I don't have the same thing for breakfast every day. It's still like breakfast though, methinks, have too much and you won't be able to finish your plate, and those wonderful strips of bacon will go to waste.

Two or three at a time is my limit, but by all means, if you can devide your attention amongst more, and you're comfortable with it, Power To Ya! I think it's more of a comfort thing than an idea of what's practical or not. It's your money, and it's your love/hobby/passion. If you want to buy fourty six basses all in every colour imaginable, you don't have to justify anything. (As long as they're all EBMM of course. )
