OK comedown guys. First off if you read my original post I said I have owned EBMM basses and LOVED them!!! Second I was surprised at the condition of this bass due to the fact I know EBMM are of the best quality. I didn’t mean to bash EB but I due think GC should take better care of there stock. The bass I am taking about was a Stingray not an OLP and I’m could be wrong on the tort pick guard it might have been black.
As for posting on both boards I posted it on Talk Bass then thought the people at EB may want to know what was going on in the stores. If I have offended any one that was not my intent I’m sorry for that.

No problem, HMZ. It can be a sore subject, though.

But really, it's in the best interest of the retailer to keep their inventory (especially the exposed inventory) in good shape.

When EBMM's leave the factory, they are set up to go right out of the box. That's why I prefer to order mine, as opposed to buying 'new' basses that have been handled by the general public, and exposed to interior climates that suit the human body better than wood.

To be honest, it's not fair to single out GC, when I've seen this same problem with one-off (mom/pop) stores where they don't take care of their inventory.

The same thing would happen at your home if you let your instrument go; no cleaning, oiling the fretboard, occasional truss rod adjustments, climate control...etc.

GC lets everyone that walk through the door play whatever they want. You probably got burned by that return policy GC has. Take it play it and if it doesn't work bring it back for a full refund.

That is one hell of a policy IMHO.

Now someone took the bass you are talking about and gigged it screwed it up and returned it. Just like I seen EB send a new jack out to a complainer about his jack not working on the SR. Turned out he was jumping on the cord and ripping the jack out of the SR.

What I can't believe is that anyone can blame the builder when they see an for sure used bass. GC I have no experience with since I don't live near one. I take it from online experience that everyone goes to GC and plays all day long and knows they aren't buying.

They go there get a bass while they have one on order play one and return it.


Plumb predictable. And not really GC's fault.

Just for the record, when I bought my Honeyburst/Maple SR4 from GC last September it was missing three knobs. Ernie Ball was kind enough to send them to me FOC.I don't know if this is Ernie Ball's normal policy but it was appreciated.Thanks BP!

I picked up an EBMM Axis guitar at a local GC once, and the 1st string was broken between the nut and the tuning peg. (some kid must have reached for the tuning key without realizing it was a Floyd Rose system with fine tuners at the bridge)

I mentioned it to a guy on the staff, and he immediately fetched the guitar and re-strung it. I was impressed. He said it was hard to keep up, as they had so many guitars and this sort of thing happened ALL the time.

Still, it sounds like the bass you tried had fret sprout or something.. and that probably didn't happen overnight. The retailer ought to be a little more proactive with these sort of things, but hopefully you brought it to their attention and they'll take care of that poor bass!

We all get bummed when we hear of a neglected EBMM, that's why we're called knuckleheads around here.. it's supposed to be a pet name... but that Big Poppa has a wicked sense of humor...

little fuggin urchins, scum of the earth will literally walk into a gc, and steal knobs off of guitars and amps just to be "cool"


missing knobs is common and unfortunate, bad action is inexcusable when in abundance.


theres about 1000 guitars and basses in each guitar center, lay off them if one happens to not be setup perfectly, they only have maybe 6 guys, only one of which actually plays bass (if you are lucky).

oh well.

when i was a gc zombie robot, all my basses were setup, from the ibanez to the musicmans.

it's all in good time management...some just don't have it.

Yeah, don't blame EBMM for the way GC treats their basses once they have them. Jack and I went to a GC a while back, picked up a Sterling that made no sound through an amp.

Checked the battery.........woh, no battery! You just shake your head.

Just wanted to kick the horse one more time....you know. Just to see if it was really dead.

Yes...

Sometimes they can fall off on their own accord, as well, especially if the bass has been tried out by every browser in GC. But my main concern is setup. I went into the GC in Pasadena just to see if they had any of the StingRay HHs. They had one along with a traditional SR4 that was a gorgeous 'burst (vintage, I believe) with rosewood neck, black pickguard. I really wanted to try them both out, but the action was so high that I would have needed a bow to play them!

So, I guess that is where smaller stores have the advantage. They can take the time to make sure that all necessary adjustments are made to the instruments so that they're playable. I'm sure even smaller GCs out there pay more attention to issues like these. But I can certainly see how this could make EBMM look bad, especially, if that bass was the only MM among dozens of other basses from the competition left to be sold. What's a person unfamiliar with MusicMan to think?
