OK, I guess I owe a semi-sane post in here. I do have my
own SR30 and haven't found it to be particularly weighty.
If I have any complaint widdit, it's the lack of a top loader
option on the bridge. Since I change my strings less often
than the UK changes monarchs, I spoze I can deal widdat.
If you want that 'hog tone, IIRC there were certain special
edition MMs featuring a 'hog tone block, the remainder of
the body being swamp ash. Since the 'wings' don't really
contribute near as much as the central core, tonewise, it's
possible these basses could be your solution to the weight
problem. I don't recall which models these were but surely
one of the Knowledgeable Gentlemen will chime in soon.
Maybe my taste in tone is kinda unrefined, but I find 'hog
and poplar to be similar, at least when compared to ash. I
had a USA SUB, SR4 type, and parted with it as being too
similar to my SR30. Anywho, a SUB would be somewhat
lighter than an SR30 [in most instances] and therefor may
be a satisfactory less weighty and less costly alternative to
the SR30. Both have glossy neck finishes, so a moot point
there. I prefer the 3-band EQ, as on the SR30, but plenty
of players swear by the 2-band, as found on the SUB.
