My Bass strings need a bath but how ?

put them in a pot of boiling water. i forget the amount of time though. i believe its 20-30mins but i havent done this since i was 16.

They say that isopropyl (sp?) alcohol is much better to use. I've never tried it - I just buy new ones.

Now after you boil them, what kind of sauce do you put on them?

Make sure they are Al Dente, not mushy.:p Actually I used to boil my most recent set when I'd change them over to use as backups. Of course that's when I played a lot harder and with a pick and would break a string just about every night. Actually I refer to that as my "Pre-Touch" days.:p

Just boil 'em for 30 minutes, take 'em out and towel dry 'em off. Worked for me.;)

No pasta jokes here. But did you hear the one about the . . . ?

I'm lucky in that I've got enough money to put new strings on all eight of my basses when they need it, but it's probably the New England skinflint (grandpa) in me that forces me to soak a set once before trashing them. I use denatured alcohol. I keep a big jar filled with it, drop the strings in for 24 hours or so, take them out and dry them, and they're NOT as good as new. They do, however, sound zingier for about a week or two. After that, into the trash.

I've been using a rotation of a few sets of strings soaking them in methyl hydrate and then changing them every 3-4 weeks. It is the cheapest way to have fresh sounding strings all the time. (when all your spare cash goes to equipment you need to find ways to be cheap) Boiling only seems to work once or twice then the strings are dead for good.

You can get the stuff at a paint or hardware store.

I'm not a chemist, but all boiling or soaking in chemicals does is remove the gunk that's built up on the strings. Nothing's going to reverse the wear and tear the strings sustain. If you have spare money for gear, you might want to think about investing in some strings as well. I routinely pick up decent strings (D'Addario, Ernie Ball) on eBay for under $10 a set. I've accumulated a box full of new strings and on average paid about $8-9/set.

I've had enough chemicals absorbed into my system from working in a body shop. I'm not adding to that when I play bass. I'll just buy new ones.

the thing is I have no job for the moment , and I'm keepin' all I have for untill I get a new one (job), or a SR5 for a good price ( there I'll even have to sell my Ibanez for that ) I just wanned to clean my strings cause they felt all somewhat sticky and filled up with dead skin and it was not confortable to play with all those things on them .. I have an other packs of Backup strings both Datario AND EB .. I just don'T want to change them cause they are dirty ... when my jeans needs a wash , I wash them, when my strings needs a good boil , I boil them , when I'll concider they are really dead I'll change them then.

Cool for the Ebay , but Anyway I have not Credit Cards.
