My Petrucci Has a New Nut

I decided to try a 1 5/8" nut instead of the 1 11/16" nut. I generally like a narrower string spacing. So I replaced the nut.

First I got the old nut out with a pair of pliers after a lot of struggle.

Next I smoothed out the nut slot with a file.

While I was at it I filed down the area behind the nut and took off all the clear coat. You can see in the picture the clear coat picks up again where the fingerboard slopes down to the headstock.

Then I cut the new nut, shaped and installed it. The end product plays great and looks pretty good too.

beej why did you file down the wood behind the nut?

edit: you should cut your strings right down to the hole in on the tuning peg
my apologies if you had just taken that photo before you did it

as long as the strings dont wrap around the post then they are trimmed short enough.

peat,
I'm missing the point in string cutting right down to the hole ?

When they paint the headstock they clearcoat right up onto the back of the nut. When I pulled the nut out the clear coat was damaged and rough so I filed it all off behind the nut for looks.

You guys are very adventurous with your expensive toys.........
:D

The first thing I did with it was got out my 3/8" Drill bit and drill huge holes in it to install Dunlop flush mount straplocks. I'll post photos of that next.

there just wood. plus we always need more excuses to buy more of em.......... nothin ventured...nothin gained..... :D

Couldn't agree more! They're just wood and wire - and they're meant for playing; not to be wall art. I say if it feels good, do it ;)

(And yeah ... need to keep feeding that addiction ...)

yes so you dont get stabbed
but mainly just because you can
cos they are locking tuners
also i think it just looks really good
nice and neat

peat,

Sorry for misunderstanding :o

I got confused cause the picture showed the string neatly trimed (the hairstyle that I do to my strings as well) and I was wondering are there some hidden points in cutting it even further down to the hole on the peg.

Anyway I totally agree with you !

p.s A friend of mine usually answers questions of why type with a reply:
Why do dogs lick their balls ?

you've guessed it - because they can !

Cheers
