Hey everyone,
This is my first post here and I'm sorry to start it out with a sad note, but I've been having some bad luck with my Petrucci guitar and thought I'd share it in case anyone had any insights.

I've had the guitar for a couple of years and have had no problems until 5 months ago. I took it to a local music store for a setup and when I got it back, I discovered that the tone knob wasn't working. If I turned it to max, it didn't sound as bright as it should have and turning it to min made very little change in the tone. So I took it back to the store thinking they screwed something up. After they inspected it, they came to the conclusion that something was wrong in the electronics of the output jack and sent it back to Ernie Ball to be fixed. Thankfully, EB replaced the part under warranty and sent it back and it worked perfectly.

Two weeks ago, I decided I wanted the action adjusted on the guitar and took it back to the store for a new setup. I got the guitar back the other day and discovered the exact same problem! The tone knob was not working! So I took the guitar back again and talked to the guy who worked on it. He said he didn't touch the electronics since he just did a basic setup. He called someone at Ernie Ball and they came to the conclusion that since it's a recurring problem, the cause must be somewhere else in the electronics that didn't get fixed before. So they're sending it back to EB again for them to inspect it.

I'm not really too pissed about it since it's not really anyone's fault and I seem to have been unlucky. But it just seems like a strange problem to me. Especially since both times the problem occured while the guitar was at the shop getting a setup. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but I really don't know what to think since I don't know what could cause the problem.

Jeff,

Wow.. yet another Pittsburgher on this forum? That makes like 4 or 5 of us now.

Where did you take it for setup? I have a JP6 and have no problem like you've described, but I haven't taken it to anyone for setup.

It's not impossible that you have some real defect with the electronics, but having the problem show up after leaving your shop 2 times in a row makes me wonder.

I really dont believe that our very basic jp electronics can mysteriously go bad after getting a set up from this shop. They may be great but 2+2 doesn't equal four in this instance.......If you send it back to us please dont take it to this shop again.

Wow, I didn't realize there were a bunch of Pittsburghers here. Cool! I've been taking it to Swissvale Music, which I've always thought was a great store and I've enjoyed doing business with them over the years. I don't like to place blame on them because they always seemed very professional and very knowledgable and I guess I just like giving people benefit of the doubt. But either way, I definitly won't be taking it back for a setup. I have decided to learn to do it myself because I'm never completely satisfied with the results anyway.

I repeat, learn to do your own set ups :p
I would like to repeat what Raz said :)

Darrell let me setup his EVH this last weekend. It was great to show him what I knew and to learn what he did. But the most fun came from playing it afterwords. Dude! just one more tweak here...... Aaaah, that's the ticket. For me it's a labor of love. I think I did a great job but I still have to say:
Jon is the man
The job he did to my pet was sickening
That's a good thing.

Thanks Norm....I really do love hearing when people learn to do their own setups. Who knows better than you how you want your axe to play!

Jeff,

I've never dealt with Swissvale, but they've been around forever so it does surprise me a little. I had always used The Guitar Doctor who works out of Hollowood Music with good results. However, I haven't let anyone touch my JP, and I don't intend to, either! The guys on this forum convinced me months ago that I should learn to set up my own guitar.

I'm glad you've decided to do the same. Think of the money we'll save! Plus, being able to tweak out the action on the fly is a great skill to have, IMHO.

Edit: by the way, Jeff.. "Big Poppa" who replied above is none other than Sterling Ball, owner of the company that made your guitar. Jongitarz runs the repair department. So you're reading responses from the most qualified people, period!

Yeah, this will be my new haven for guitar setup advice, I'm sure. I think I was always intimidated by the idea of doing my own setups in the past because of my lack of knowledge. I guess I was always worried I'd screw everything up and make it worse. But with the right guidance, I'm sure I can learn how to do things correctly.

Are there any older threads here about how to do basic setups I should refer to? I understand some of the basics as far as truss rod adjustements, intonation, and action adjustments, but I don't know any of the proper methods for making these adjustments.
