Neck of Luke smoother than Axis (?)

I am currently testing the Luke vs. Axis. From the physical properties one thing really surprises me: the neck of the Luke is much smoother than the Axis.

Can anybody tell me, is that by design or just a question of the piece of maple chosen for that particular guitar? However I would assume that the manufacturing process for both necks is the same, implying they should be very similar regarding the "feel".

By the way, the SN of the Luke is G22789, the Axis SN is G21138.

I've owned both... I don't have a Luke anymore, but I never thought of the Luke neck as "smoother" than the Axis - as far as the feel of the wood, they were identical (maple with a gunstock oil finish... how should it feel?) The Luke's neck was certainly smaller than the Axis in terms of the amount of wood behind the fretboard, if not the fretboard width itself... I sold my Luke because I found the neck too small and difficult to play - the Axis neck is perfect for my hand, however...

I've played a Luke, and it seems to me like the Luke neck is very similar to the neck on an Eric Clapton Fender Strat. That is to say that the neck is kind of "V" shaped on the backside. I prefer the Axis neck personally, it is more of an accentric egg-shaped neck.

an that is my point: The feel of the wood is different! The neck of the Axis is "rougher" than the Luke's neck. That really is what surprises me. Seems to me it is related to the batch of maple or the mfg. process. By the way, I like the shape of the Axis neck much better than the Luke, too.

This doesn't really surprise me. All four of my 'Balls have slightly different feels to the wood, not to mention neck shape. Especially since I bought two of them used.

I would say: don't sweat it. If the neck is slightly "rough", 5 bucks worth of Tru-Oil and steel wool will take care of that with no problem!
