New amp question

Well, now that I've upgraded to an excelent bass, I was thinking about a new amp to replace my Crate BT15 practice amp. I was looking at a Gallien-Krueger 400 RB-IV 210 combo amp, but I'm also considering Markbass's version of a 210 combo, depending on its price. I want to keep things down around $400-600, so I have a feeling the Markbass is out of the question, although I don't know its price.

Any other suggestions? I'll probably go with a combo, so if you guys know of any inexpensive, but still high-quality ones that I haven't mentioned... Thanks in advance,

There are so many choices to be made in that area that we all are going to be confusing you with advice.

Keep thinking like you are and plug into what you buy.

Get the sound in your head that fits your style.

There are lots of us here. Usually all of us are smarter than one of us. I am afraid that just doesn't apply when it comes to amplification choices.

It isn't that I wouldn't like to help you I just don't know how.

Find the sound you want and go for it.

Listening to advice may help but it well never be the final your decision if you know you.

You know, that probably helped me out more than anything else would have.

The only thing I need to know now is the price of that Markbass amp... Anyone know it?

By the way, are we allowed to reveal prices on this site? I know we can't for new Music Man basses, but what about non-Music Man products? Please forgive my ignorance...

Just hold out until you try the Markbass. I am not sure of the costs or I would post them even if I shouldn't here.


Your EB bass will sound good through any amp and any cab. You want a combo there are lots of choices.

Find a local mom and pop shop or a GC and play some amps and cabs along with combos or even preamp, amp and cab combos.

The next step from hearing what turns your crank is the best one to take.


Or tell us what you expect to hear. We meaning all of us may be able to guess closer.

Well, I've already played through several G-K's, but not the 210.

It's strange, since on one hand I love the G-K growly sound, but I also love natural sounds, thereby forcing me to choose mainly between these two companies...

I suppose I'll just have to wait until the local GC gets Markbass in. By the way, thanks for all the help.

Well try a Peavey I know there is one to try. They won't growl like the GK all the time.

Still hold out for the Markbass as that is what BP reccomends.

I got the single H bongo 5 on his say so and imagine this. He was right! It is the end all in basses to me.

Oh and come back late tonight when someone else is online besides me.

Before this thread is over you will need a bottle of aspirin to figure out what you should do for an amp.

We are a zealous lot around here really.

But if you want to know anything about MM basses you did come to the right place.

It is the amplification of MM basses that confuse all of us so.

I thought that I saw over on takbass that the MarkBass 12" combo goes for around $700.

I hate to bring this up again, but recently I've been looking at the Ashdown MAG C410T 300 combo. I played through an Ashdown MAG 300 at a bass store recently, and loved the tone.

I've read a lot of great reviews on it, and just wanted to see if any of you guys have ever had any experience with the combo version, specifically with a bongo.

I have an ABM 500 C210 combo and it sounds great!

But I also have a MarkBass (an older model head) and it's great too. I would certainly try the new MarkBass stuff before I pulled the trigger on anything.

markbass stuff costs an arm and a leg up in canada... keep in mind i never checked out any combo's. I'm a big fan of eden, but that can also get expensive... check out Nemesis.

Yeah, I'd figured that Markbass would cost a lot, but I'm still not sure.
My friend just got a Nemesis combo the other day, and it sounded great, but I'm really starting to consider Ashdown, since I've heard it sounded great with bongo's.

Arg, this amp-thing is driving me insane. I think I'll go with the Ashdown, but I've read a review from one guy who took off the back panel and found out that the head in the combo wasn't removeable. If this is true, then I probably won't get the combo... But buying the head and the cabinet seperately costs the same, so I think I'll probably do that.

Has anyone had any experience with the MAG 300 head? Any input would be great.

Edit: One last question. Does the MAG 300H head use speakon outputs, 1/4 outputs, or one of each? I haven't been able to find out anywhere, nor have I been able to find a picture of the back of the head or a cabinet. Thanks,

The MAG300H has only 2 1/4" outputs - no speakons.
I think they sound good but it's so subjective - you really have to try one yourself.

The local GC in San Jose had a couple of Markbass combos, along with some heads and cabinets. I tried the 210 (or 102) combo and it sounds great but it is small. As with all things Italian, it is expensive!

He's right. I have a Gallien Krueger 2x10 combo that kicks mucho behindo, but my SR sounds awesome through my 8 inch Crate combo.

Test drive everything and go to GC. If you don't like it 3.5 weeks from now take it back and get something else.

Unfortunately, it looks like Markbass is a little over my price range, but I'm going to Guitar Center later today to try out some Gallien-Krueger stuff. The Ashdown is also still a possibility.
