New clear PG

Very nice, sir.

I have been through a boatload of basses, to be sure, and I really don't have too many regrets, but the one I would take back if I could is a black sparkle Stingray, much like yours except the two band preamp.

That was....no, still IS....the finest Stingray I have ever played, including pre-EBs, yes, go ahead, do your worst.

Thanks for bringing back fond memories and I hope you love that one the way I loved mine!

I'm definitely loving mine. It's my gig bass, and gets babied. I have my old Ibanez beater for a practice bass, and since my band plays everything down a 1/2 step, the 'Ray is set up for that, whereas my Ibanez is set up for regular tuning.

Once in a while between practices & gigs I'll take it out and play it, but for the most part, it lives in the case. We practice & gig regularly enough that it gets played pretty regularly.

I've seen my kids knock over the Ibanez toooo many times (that's how it became the beater). If I ever get a separate room for my music stuff, it may come out more, but I feel better knowing it's 'safe'.

Hm... I love the finish. Congrats on owning such a beauty! But... I can't help but question the clear pickguard. I know the design of the SR is somewhat based on the pickguard being there, but I think it'd look better without a pickguard at all, if you're trying to show off the complete finish.

I'm looking at the pickguard and how it dulls the shine of the finish behind it. Hm... But a very beautiful bass!
 
nope, fingerstyle all the way. I've never used a pick. I guess I figured why fly naked...never really considered it before, but now I am...maybe if this one gets scratched and whatnot, affecting how 'clear' it stays, i'll whip it off and show off my naked underbelly for all to behold.

I have an Ibanez as a spare bass too but after getting used to my Ray I just don't feel comfortable playing the Ibanez anymore. So I take my Ray everywhere I play!!
 
Chuck does indeed have the black sparkle Stingray, and loves it as much as I did. He's smarter than I am, however, because he won't give it back.

no pg = exposed screwholes..

not only does this look bad, it's exposed unprotected wood. and the offchance that any sort of rise in humidity, that internal wood is completely untreated and is therefore open game to the elements..

plsu i've seen finger players use the pg as a thumbrest...



oh well, maybe i'm wrong.
 
You could put the screws in anyway, right? I wonder how that'd look.
 
I was thinking the same thing about open screwholes (that sounds like the title of a porn), which is why I leaned towards the clear PG. I wanted to show off the full beauty of the sparkle, but leave no openings for gunk to ooze into.

As far as just putting screws in with no guard, not sure if the holes are drilled down deep enough to screw the screws all the way in. I'm not one for experimentation in that department, always fearful I'll screw something up on the nicest bass I've ever owned.

Well look at it like this.... The girls in the front of the stage in a dark club aren't going to be abel to tell whether it's clear (the PG that is...) or just not there at all... So you might as well leave it on - and it will protect the enamel finish and the wood in the long run. You can always get a new PG - but it's a lot more work getting scratches buffed out of the finish. That's if they'll come out at all....

So I would suggest leaving the PG on.
 
Screws with no pickguard. I tried that with my 62 RI Jazz. I was gonna order a clear PG for it but never did. Tort stays on it. But it looked funny to me with the screws and no PG, I couldn't leave it like that.
