I've been lurking on these boards for a few weeks, reading various posts about Music Man guitars in general, Sub1's in particular. In addition to that, I've also been keeping an eye out on EBay for the right deal. I play in an 80's style punk band [w/ metal/rock solos] that practices/gigs fairly regularly, mostly at bars and small clubs. I wanted a guitar that fit the folowing requirements:

1. Compact in size, not too heavy [this is a big deal for me because moving gear from place to place can be a chore. Case in point: recently I switched to a 5 lb. Crate Powerblock and Digitech stompbox to drive my guitar cabinet and have been more than happy w/ 'em.]

2. No locking tremelos--too much of a hassle when having to tune on stage.

3. Sturdy and utilitarian. It's going to get dinged up, get the occasional splash from an adult beverage, etc. , as I cart it around, so I didn't want something that I'd be worrying about.

4. I wanted something different from the Fenders/Gibsons one sees everywhere.

Well, I finally found what I was looking for:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=2384&item=7372240455

The guitar came in yesterday and I've basically been playing with it since. Chalk me up as another happy Ernie Ball customer.

Thanks,

So you've been lurking eh?
Glad you were and I am happy you made the pruchase. For alot of the reasons you mentioned the SUB is an ideal guitar. Welcome to Sterling's family.

Thanks, you guys. Yep, I'm really happy w/ this guitar. The string tension, action, and balance feel great. The placement of the 3-way switch is also perfect for me because my rhythm playing gets kinda spazzy at times, every once in a while resulting in an inadvertent swipe on a 3 way switch if it's placed on the top half of a guitar, like on a Les Paul. Problem solved w/ the Sub1!

Thanks again. This guitar plays so nice that I'm seriously thinking about dumping a non EB guitar or two; I don't know if I'd play them that much any more w/ the Sub1 around!

EB MusicMan SUB1 guitar - white w/ matte black pickguard, HH w/ vintage tremolo

Actually, Junior, the white w/ matte black pickguard would be first choice also [kinda reminds me of the old guitars Vinnie Moore and Jake E Lee played back in the day], but the black on black is pretty OK also.

So YOU'RE the one who sniped the auction away from me in the last few seconds!

Just kidding! :)

However, I DO blame you for giving me a case of GAS towards aquiring a Sub1 should the right oppornity arise... :D

Ya I love the Vinnie Moore old.school white and black combination. The thing I hate about the SUB1 is the black back of the neck and headstock. I would like it to be normal on mine, and optional.

So, ANNOUNCEMENT! :D

By this post I ask Ernie Ball corporations to make the neck and headstock finish optional on the SUB1. So, natural or black or w/e. :)

:D Thanks :D

The paint on the back of the neck is one of the things that helps reduce the cost of the SUB1. They don't have to worry about the cosmetics of the wood this way.
So therefore you're next step is to buy a Silo!!!! :D

....actually that's my next step!

Man, I cant wait to see your Silo AT SOME POINT, just because of the history. I was starting to think that I am probably going to have my 2nd Ball before you even get your first, but my last and FINAL upgrade to my beautiful vintage sunburst Silo made me fall in love with it 100x more and dont want to play anything else right now. The CBP LUKE will have to wait, UNLESS Pete gives me an AMAZING deal in January :D .

Yeah, I'd prefer no paint on the back of the neck also, but I see why they do it in terms of cutting costs. It'd be cool if they offered a version kinda like the Zakk LP's, with the majority of the back of the neck stripped to wood, except for the back of the headstock.
