NGD-EBMM JP7 - dilemma about small dent-what would you do?

Hi,

about a week ago I got a brand-new JP7 (I will make a proper NGD-thread with more pics later). Awesome guitar, just one small issue:
when the guitar arrived, the trem bar was loose in the case (this is the way the dealer had packed it, not EBMM) and when I opened the case, the bar was halfway lying across the headstock and caused a small dent in the headstock. (see pics)

Me being OCD about my guitars, the tiniest dent will bother me, and this dent really is very small.
Now the store where I bought it from has been more than helpful (excellent customer service) in this and offered me either to have the guitar sent back to EBMM and have the neck replaced, OR if I decide to keep the guitar with the dent I get a $200 discount.

What would you guys do in such a situation? Keep the guitar with the dent and get the $200 discount OR have the neck replaced?

I had to look pretty hard to see what you're talking about. I'd take the $200, you're going to dent it worse than that eventually.
 
Agree with Beej….

Are you going to play this thing or stare at it? If you're going to be playing it, that ding is tiny. I could barely see it and had to look for about a minute solid before i saw it.

Take the discount. Frankly, I think you are being WAYYYYYY too nit-picky and petty here and you really shouldn't get that much or demand a replacement neck. What are you going to do when YOU dent it or scratch it? Get rid of it? It's a guitar, not a museum piece. That "dent" is minuscule. Were you supposed to get a mint, new guitar? Yes. But, I think you're being a tad ridiculous here.

My advice is to stop looking at it with a microscope and start putting more dents in it by playing it...

Well, if you'd seen my guitars you know what I'm going to say :p

Keep it and get the discount, because as the others said, you will end up dinging it up anyways.

If I had bought that guitar I wouldn't even have realized that there was a dent in the headstock - and if I did, I would have concluded that I had made the ding.

When I dropped my Axis on the floor and made a nasty dent (and I mean really bad) in the finish I was sad for a week, and after that I just called it mojo - makes everything a lot easier :D
 
Take the discount. I love what I see in the pictures. Beautiful guitar. And, beautiful guitars come with baggage. I predict you will soon regret not making the very hard to see ding yourself. Best to you.
 
I had to really look hard to find the dent, but I do see it now. That's great the dealer is willing to work with you on this. This is a tough call. If it was my brand new music man, I'd want everything to be tip top. I'd ask the dealer to replace the entire guitar. I know that the guitar will most likely get used and dented and scratched at some point, but buying a brand new music man, to find a chip in the headstock that you know it came like that wouldn't be off to a good start. On the other hand, it really is hard to see. A little bit of clear nail polish to fill the dent would be my next best thing and accept the $200 credit and forget about the whole thing. It's a tough call...
 
Basically if you purchased the guitar to be placed on the wall as a collector's item, then you should return it. If you intended to use it for gigging, it's no big deal as the guitar will get as many dings and scratches based on how many gigs you do with it.
 
For that little thing, the $200 is way more than fair compensation and, if it were me, it would be done and over with. Just think of it this way. You are one step closer to having a relic'd guitar.
 
If you plan on playing it, take the discount. Otherwise get another one mint and put it under glass. those little dings and scratches are almost certainly going to happen in time anyway.

As inspiration, check out Steve Morse's No #1 guitar. That's an aspiration with any guitars, play it so much so it looks like that one.
 
If you're OCD, you've answered your own question. Return the thing! And they'll pay shipping and send you another.

Keep in mind this particular JP, and I have several JP's, the finish is the same. They all look the same. Don't settle.

I bought a used Axis Sport from a guy on ebay and the thing was perfect, but the DUMMIE didn't secure the trem arm JUST LIKE YOURS and it put a little dent in it, I was SO irritated. But that guitar is 17 years old!!! It's not like yours, you can get another one.

Go for it!!!
 
You asked this on Sevenstring as well. Thus, the consensus was...keep it and take the discount. If you are still bothered by this small chip, then perhaps this guitar is not for you?

Personally, I play my guitars everywhere. If it gets a dent or chip here and there, I don't worry too much about it because at the end of the day, it's not going to change the sound out of it and i liken it to a battle scar with a story behind it. Like anyone else, I always love a new clean guitar.....but I'm not going to keep it in a bubble so that when I sell it later in perfect condition for less than what I paid for it just so someone else can enjoy it more than I took the time to.....becomes the reality.

with some medium thickness cyano acrylate glue you can probably make that all but disappear. it's what dan erlewine uses for small finish clear coat drop fills. then you just need a razor to scrape it down, and then some super fine sand paper and buffing compound.
 
Ok, so I decided to keep the guitar as is with the dent.
Like many of you already said, that dent is so tiny and barely noticeable and definitely not worth getting so obsessed about.
I love how this guitar feels and plays and a new neck may or may not feel as good, but I don't want to take that chance.
It would also be such a pity to have this neck thrown away for something this tiny.

And I'm definitely going to play this guitar A LOT, so chances are I will put some dings in it in the long run, so it won't matter anyway.

I will post a proper NGD-thread with more pics soon.
