When I changed out the pickup on my SR5 that I got from Pete, my treble pot no longer has a center detent. Does anyone have any ideas about what happened or how to fix it? If it needs a new pot, I'll just live with it. I just like to use the detent as a starting place to make adjustments.

The shaft on the tone pots sinks down when you turn it off center. If the knob is installed when the pot has been turned off center, you lose the detent.

I learned this a couple of years ago when I bought a used SR5 and sent it to EB to have all three pots replaced (along with a couple of other things). All three pots were fine, and I learned an important fact about Stingray setups.

This of course doesn't affect Stingrays with 2-band preamps, they are boost only and don't have a center detent.

Err, 2 band Stingrays are boost and cut. It's clearly stated in the little handbook that came with mine ('79 model). I think the 'boost only' myth came about due to the controls having no centre detent for people to set a flat EQ.

!! I learned something new today !!

I almost always play with my treble and bass boosted all the way on my 2-banders, so I apologize for helping to perpetuate the myth - I should have known better.

After 29 years you would think I could have rtfm...

Well, at least I was right that they have no detents on the 2-banders......right?

Any possibility you could share a scan of that handbook page? Thanks.

No probs.... :)

Todd, yup you're spot on about having no detent on them. :) Makes it a pain in the butt to try and find a flat EQ, but like you, I tend to crank mine right up anyhow.

Yeah no problem Gav, I'll do it tonight.

I've just spotted you posted a link to a scanned manual. Mine looks identical, but is not in as good condition as the one on your link.

Thanks, Gav. I remember wondering if you already had a scan on your site when I posted that!
