The nut on my Ray broke in the usual place, and I lost the small piece so I can't glue it.

It's not compensated. I think it's the original ['91], cut deep for FL.

Are new replacements compensated? I don't need that, since it's FL there's no reason for it.

Is anyone using a non-original nut that really enhances anything? I don't want to use brass cuz it's FL. Brass would just cause a greater voicing difference between open and closed notes. Anyone made their own out of FB woods?

I am sure EB customer service can fix you up. That's the best option IMHO

I'm having Jim Mouradian in Cambridge replace mine tommorrow with a natural bone nut. (Stingray 20th Anniversary)- I'll keep you boned-up on it when I get it back.

I had the same exact problem. Mine broke under the E string in half. I asked ernie ball repairs for a replacement and they sent me a free uncut one. I started carving mine out and got to the last notch when i accidentally broke it  But i ordered new ones that should be stronger. If your willing to and have the time id say get a cheap one and try it yourself? Its actually not too bad in my opinion if you just take your time. I use bone so its probably much easier to carve yourself than brass and maybe carbon fiber. Use the broken nut for reference and string spacings. It will save you quite a few bucks.

Or, you could ship your bass to EBMM and have Jon do the bestes job possible on it. this way you are also assured that you will get the best , next to original. because quite frankly, nobody knows EBMM's like Jon knows EBMM's. I have had work done by him (fret job) and he is the shizznitz!

I know i must sound like a moron but i dont have files cause im only 17 and low on cash so i was using a hacksaw to start the cuts and then an exacto knife to carve it out. It works fine as long as you take your time and of course it does take a little longer. I also used 100 grit sand paper to sand the sides and get it to fit properly in the neck ( i would'nt use sand paper more coarse than that cause for all i know i could mess the nut up). But yes this is how i did it. But it cracked because i had the knife in the slot and twisted the knife cause im an idiot and thats what snapped it. So take your time they break easy. I ordered two new ones made of water buffalo horn (maybe theyll be stronger) sooo ill keep you posted when they come and I cut those. If anyone wants to tell me how i can get pictures up maybe ill take some during the process.

Thanks for the explanation. We all do things the way we see fit. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't.

When I had my SR5 turned fretless I had the repair tech. cut the new nut from rosewood and it was great. I also had a purpleheart nut on a fretless that had a purpleheart board and it sounded great too.

Guys, I am a hillbilly and would have tried the same thing at 17 or probably 48 years of age. I admire a young person going out and trying to accomplish what they want. It doesn't work out all the time as we all know.

I am not sure where you are at but take your bass to a tech and have him cut the nut. I will foot the bill. PM me with the bill.

You need to be able to play the bass

Carbon fiber is a real horror if you wnat to make a nut. Dulls your tools, and the splinters are terrible! Brass isn't one I like, because the open notes sound very different.

PM me the specs on the nut and I will cut you one taht you can just make the final . Just make a 1:1 drawing, and you decide on bone, ebony, plastic or fancy plastic (slippery stuff)

Or, I'll send you some old files that will ge the job done.

It's your call.

I agree you are all very generous. Thats a 60 dollar job around here. Thanks for the offer but I cant just take your money like that. Id feel bad. I just got home from school a bit ago and found that the parts had arrived! little did I know that these uncut ones can be cut to make at least 4 nuts. Thats a little bit more than I need considering I bought 2 uncut ones. Im going to try this one last time to see if I can pull it off. This horn seems to be quite a bit stronger than the bone. I still have to be careful so I dont break it and if I actually suceed this time, it will be another repair I can do myself! I really do appreciate the offer though and its very very generous of you. If you guys want I can try to take pictures of the process of cutting the nut with tools I have laying around. The first one was comming out great too.:( Just let me know if you guys want to see pictures.

Hey strummer how much would you want for those old files? They might be just what I need.

I don't want anything.
I just feel you should at least have half decent tools when you have the guts to try and cut your own nuts (um, that didn't come out right, but you know what I mean).
Just send me your address and I'll post them right away.
