Ok guys - I've read the FAQ's and it seems that Birchwood-Casey products are used by EB.

My query is about MAPLE necks only, and only about using Birchwood-Casey True oil and Birchwood-Casey Gun Stock wax.

If you read all the FAQ's they kinda go around in circles a bit and I'd like to clarify something before I start using oils and waxes on my new guitar.

So am I right in saying this:-

Back of the neck, apply Birchwood-Casey True oil with finger sparingly, let it dry for at least 24 hours then use 0000 Wire wool (or preferably 3m scotch pad).

Front of the neck, apply Birchwood-Casey Gun Stock wax sparingly, let it dry for a couple of hours then buff.

Q. - Is it recomended to also apply the wax to the back of the neck after the tru oil treatment?

The guitar neck is slightly rough - not suprising the amount I have been playing it! - CS has confirmed with me that this is OK and nothing to worry about.
Pro-tem, I have lightly applied a very fine scotch pad to it and it's smooth again.
- Man I just love that AL neck !!!!!

When you say you will wax the 'front' of the neck, do you mean the fretboard?

My recollection is that you put the oil on back of the neck for about 5 minutes, then wipe it off. Let it dry 24 hours and then apply the wax ->also to the back of the neck<-.

As I recall, you don't put anything on the 'front' of the neck, except maybe some lemon oil to clean the fretboard.

From the FAQ

Q: How do I clean and maintain my Music Man neck?
A: To clean the neck, use a high-grade of lemon oil. If the neck is very dirty, try Murphy's Oil Soap diluted 3:1. Some players have found that using a toothbrush for cleaning is very effective.

Since the neck is unfinished, it is more susceptible to humidity changes. A very infrequent dose of gunstock oil will help to keep the neck maintained; we recommend Birchwood-Casey Tru-Oil, but any good quality gunstock oil will work. Use a small amount, leave it on for 5 minutes, then wipe it off with a paper towel. After that, apply Birchwood-Casey Tru-Wax. Be sure to douse the paper towel with water before disposing of it! Read the wax and oil manufacturer's instructions regarding disposal of these used paper towels.

Birchwood-Casey products are available at most sporting goods or gun stores. Their web address is http://www.birchwoodcasey.com.

You can search most of the previous neck question threads and get a variety of individual responses from what others have done but these are the basics from the source. Some do more/less often or never or have found their own methods

These instructions are not for the fingerboard, which I might occasionally clean but wouldn't treat (although some would).

Good Luck

Oh yeah - front of neck = fretboard.
Shucks why didn't I think of that when I typed the question

I have been Using birchwood casey gun stock Oil for many years, Probably since Mid to late 70's maybe, And Have never used the wax.

What i do is this, Four zero Steel wool the whole maple neck first front and back, Like you have explained, apply and rub in the Gun Stock oil let dry for 24 hours,

Lightly rub front and back again with "0000" steel wool, then on the back of the neck use 2000 grit sand paper, dry of course and it'll feel like glass and stay like that for a few years, Mind you I don't sweat at all so im sure this could be different for different folks. Good Luck.

does the birchwood-casey oil clean any stains on the fretboard, or does it just seal the wood?

i am going to my local gun shop to get some....i have never cleaned the neck on my EVH (it isnt really that dirty) but i'm due for a string change, so this is a good time!!

guys who have used the birchwood casey wax: do you like the finish it gives on the neck? (smooth?)

tru oil is not used to clean......only to seal.......
don't put it on your fingerboard !!!!
the wax makes it slicker & shiney
i really like the B & C sheen & conditioner too.......talk about smooth !!!!
i used it on beej's neck. almost like a finished neck.....but more natural.

Well, i bought some of the BC oil and wax today.

went downstairs to change the strings on my EVH...i cleaned the fretboard w/ lemon oil, (looks awesome)...smells good too :)

then i applied the BC true oil to the back of the neck, let it set for about 30 minutes, wiped it down, and applied 2 coats of the BC wax.

i think it works great...nice smooth finish!
