OK so I FINALLY purchased some Birchwood-Casey products for my necks, and my question is, what or how do I know if their is already a load of wax on the neck...and if there is how does one strip the wax? Since I purchased most of my guitars used, I don't know the history of their care. I've often read that Ibz owners will sand and apply tung oil...is some light sanding recommended to necks that appear obviously coated with wax...thanks.
 
I wouldn't use sand paper. The most I would use is fine steel wool.

Raz..You can use sandpaper on the back of the neck. Use at least 600 grit. I use 600, then 1200 at the shop, and then put the oil on, let it sit for about 5 min. then wipe it off with a clean towell(paper is ok) Then use the wax.

Ah you are the man with the plan...thanks (I'll do a test run on my Wolfie, that way my EBMM's won't become overnight guiney pigs :D )

Just a bit of lemon oil on the fretboard when it starts to look dry

Oh, now I've seen some discussion before concerning maple fretboards...I've read that lighter fluid can be used to clean them and I have also read that they too can be oiled and waxed...any thoughts?

Not thinkin' you're green dude, just that some peeps read these things and then go try that lol....I was thinking of getting one and shave the finish off so you'd have to oil and wax it...

Hey you still on Halo2 or what? I just got my xbox rehooked up...

Yes I am in fact...but I haven't played LIVE in a dog's age, besides I suck :D
My Gtag is Razenstein (yeah I know, long story)
You know, that crossed my mind also, about the finish...but up untill now, it's never really caused a problem.

Ha...that being said I need to get some BW+C Wax....I have the oil, but I never got the wax and I spent the day dealing with the temp change around here...
 
Lighter fluid has naptha in it. Naptha is a great grunge cleaner, but be careful as it is lighter fluid :eek:

I would not use oil and wax on any fretboard mice elf. ;)

So Jon, on a maple neck, only oil & wax the back and use - what, murphy's on the fretboard to clean it?

I would never let my fretboard get to where you would need to use Murphys, but if you do, or you buy a dirty one, yeah, thats what I would use
 
Well that's what happened to me, I purchased one with a dirty looking maple fretboard...I tried the Murphy's...it did clean a little, but not the ground in stuff.
