On my Morse, I noticed that backing off the volume knob also changes the tone.

I've only had this guitar for a few weeks, so I'm still getting used to all the settings and pickup options.

When I back off the volume, after a quarter turn or so not only does that volume get lower, it also cuts the highs out of the tone. I've never had a guitar volume pot do that--is this normal? When I'm playing, I like to have my amp volume set fairly high, and use the guitar's volume control to leave a little extra boost when I solo.

With the change in tone, I guess this is something I'll have to be aware of with my Morse.

When you say it cuts your highs, do you mean while playing overdriven or distorted? For most guitars, it is normal for the gain to roll off with the guitar volume knob. Simply put, the amount of overdrive/distortion is dependent upon the input level. If you reduce the input level, you reduce the amount that the signal is overdriven - which can have the effect of cutting some of the highs.

I think Steve likes this effect on his guitar. It was like that on both of mine stock. I put a .001 in both mine, and problem solved.

yeah, I was under the impression that it was supposed to do that too. I kind of started to llike it on mine.
