I think he's got some really light fret buzz? It's contributing to that sharp, crunchy sound of his, I believe. Also, perhaps a lighter guage of strings would help.
 
I think some of the distortion is from the recording - even though he always did have a bit of edge to his sound.

IMO I think his tone was better and cleaner on the records...

Well, it is too bright. I can't achieve it even when turning the treble all way up +treble boost(even with the MAPLEIZER provided by Oldbluesbassman :D ) . Maybe he's using an ampeg? It was the typical combination of that era.......
 
I think he got a custom Mapleizer Pro. He IS Louis Johnson, you know.

For simply playing and fooling around on the bass:
P.O.S. ESP B205 -> Behringer BX600 60W 12" combo amp
For recording:
P.O.S. ESP B205 -> Behringer BX600 60W 12" combo amp -> P.O.S. ProCo CB-1 Direct Box -> P.O.S. Computer sound card's microphone jack.

If you haven't yet noticed, I endorse the P.O.S. brand. But that'll all end when my Bongo arrives in October. :D

Anyway, I think Louis is running a clean signal. As I said before, I think it's really light fret buzz that's adding that "crunchy" texture to his tone. And look at this technique. He's not slapping - he's beating the bass. You're bound to get aggressive tones with that kind of technique! I also have the full video of this clip and he says that he often breaks strings during takes of a recording. :eek:
