I am in NYC tomorrow and will have a few hours free to go to 48th st and check out the music stores while the girl is researching at the Lincoln Center library. Anybody got a recomendation of the best way to get from Grand Central to 48th st where all the Music stores are? I would appreciate the help.

It's only ½ mile away...

Exit the Port Authority terminal on the 8th avenue side at 42nd street. It's a few short blocks up to 48th and a then over to 7th Avenue...

Check out Manny's Music and Sam Ash for sure - there's a bunch of other shops as well worth peeking into.

Unfortunately, NYC is expecting very heavy rain all day tomorrow. :(

Thanks thats great help. Unfortunately I will be there wether it rains or not so this will be fun.
 
If it's raining, you can take the E train up to the 7th Ave station (2 stops), and then transfer to the B or D downtown to Rockefeller Center (1 stop). It's only a block down to 48th St and a half block back across town towards Port Authority.

I'd also reccomend if you have time to go check out 30th St Vintage Guitars, which is inexplicably located on 30th St by 8th Ave. You can take the A, C or E trains down to 34th St and walk the last 4 blocks. They usually have an interesting selection of basses (usually good for a couple of vintage MM's, too) and don't give you a hard time about trying stuff out.
