OT: Whois Gillian Welch?

Today I stumbled on a couple of CDs by Gillian Welch, and I was floored. I got the two records they had in the store (Hell Among The Yearlings & Revival), but noone knew much about her. So I ask you, o knowledgeable crowd: Who is Gillian Welch?

I remember her from the Grammy winning "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou" soundtrack. She did a couple of songs with Alison Krauss and Emilou Harris.
